At a guess, I reckon about 20 skiers wish this gondola in Kitzbuhel had closed half an hour before it stopped today...

Harald Angerer (via Google Translate) wrote: ... at around 2:00 pm a gondola had wedged itself into the middle station due to a sudden gust of wind and had stopped the train. Mountain rescuers of the district of Kitzbühel and the fire brigade moved out to rescue winter sports enthusiasts from the gondolas.

About 20 winter sportsmen were stuck in the gondolas. Mountain Rescuers and firefighters from all over the district were gathered to recover the prisoners.

At 16.30 the last guest could be recovered from a gondola.

All reported safe and well but I imagine that was an "interesting" afternoon.

The severe weather warning for Switzerland has now been extended to Friday. Tomorrow the snowfall level will rise to over 2000m. The railway line from Visp to Zermatt has been hit by an avalanche and the police are now starting to close roads because of avalanche danger.
Somebody has posted a video of today's skiing conditions at Zermatt on Youtube, bet you are all glad you're not here!

Good grief!

We'll have to extend our snow condition vocabulary with "bits of forest"!

What's with the 'warm' (above 0c) weather that is happening? Just reading the report for ADH and it says "wet".

Yes we all felt a bit down about not being able to ski but ultimately we felt safe , on the way down the gondola the empty ones returning back up the mountain were wildly swinging in the wind.

It has been snow/ sleet all night so the top hopefully has had a good dump.

Icey , it is not cold at all averaging around -1 to 4 degrees here so I can assume it's similar in other regions in the alps.

The problem now will be Avalanche s as swingbeep has mentioned.

It's going to be an interesting day!
