That pic will be a collector's item very soon BB - the new gondola on Solaise is in operation this season so the chair lift is no more

Hi Dobby (AKA old git)

Mark Warner have a Solo week on the 8th Jan and you can get a twin room sole use in their ski in ski out hotel in Les Deux Alpes at £645 based on a twin room for sole use. They operate a good social skiing group and being a single week, it might be more fun. Flights available from LGW, BHX MAN and LHR. Ive satyed here twice, its a great hotel and the food is good too. heres a link to see it on my web site

Cheers, all. Some excellent advice and things to think about. I would prefer to go with a Bash/big group but I am rather stuck with the dates of 14-21 Jan (family restrictions, mostly related to birthdays and GCSEs, though how a middle-aged scientist type can help with analysing poetry [aside from, "what a load of old *****"] is anyone's guess). I am more minded not to go with a chalet on the grounds that it is harder to get away from any people you don't like :).

We organise a big group every year and use the size of the group to drive a bargain. Any freebies are ploughed back into the group. Most of us are getting on a bit and have been skiing since teens. Roger, our leader, is 70something and can ski better than any of us. Non-profit. Roger covers his outlay for stamps and phonecalls.

Venue: Hotel Grohmann, Campitello, Italy.
Our Hotel is ideally located in the centre of Campitello with only a 3 minute walk to the Col Rodella cable car, which is an ideal launch pad into the immense Sella Ronda Dolomiti Superski Area, totalling over 1200 km of pisted runs.

Approx. group size: 120 to 156 (109 at the moment)

Basic cost: Sharing in twin, triple or quad rooms £592 each (Early price before Sept 24th, sorry)
this includes flights, transfers, HB hotel accommodation
Flights available from Gatwick, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester & Edinburgh
Extra costs for travel insurance, flight supplements, lift passes, boot & ski/snowboard hire, lessons and tourist tax.
For further information please contact Roger on:
Tel: 01202 471063 or e-mail Roger <rog.ski@talktalk.net>

Agree about the not getting away from people you don't like in a chalet....makes it a long week!

Thanks for everyone's comments and pms. All very helpful. My mate has now decided he can make a week away, just later in Jan (28 Jan.). So I'll not be going on my own. And I nearly booked something on Saturday before I spoke to him.

I started skiing 3 years ago aged 50 after retiring. I've been to Zakopane in Poland for the first couple of weeks in February on my own each time and was very happy. There are loads to places to stay, plenty of resorts and easy for taxis and busses. Ski hire was cheap (about £7 a day) and most importantly, I could afford to hire an instructor one to one for a few hours each morning (£15 an hour). The town has plenty of entertainment and you can get to Zakopane easily from Krakow, or fly to Poprad in Slovakia and take a bus to the border then another bus to Zakopane. There are also plenty of resorts in slovakia between Poprad and Zakopane to try. Last year, I stayed at a hotel that gave free access to the water park, which was fun. I also spent a week skiing in Seefeld in Austria and another week in Oberaudorf in Germany. They were nearly three times the cost but a step up in quality of skiing. I always managed to meet people when I was in the mood. I'm just sitting here now, thinking about booking next year - was thinking about Szczyrk and also looking at the Dolomites. I'm also looking at getting away in the next few days so if anyone can suggest anywhere where there is good snow ....

Hi
Have been to Niederau twice and stayed at Hannes Hotel and 2nd time at Sonnschein Hotel. Would have stayed at Hannes 2nd time but one of our party had a gluten allergy for which they could not cater.
Hannes is a bit more basic but clean, welcoming and good home cooked food. Sonnschein is bigger, has a pool and all the other extras you would expect from the higher price.
I went with my wife and daughter the first time at Hannes Hotel but as I ski, my daughter boards and Mrs walks as with all our ski holidays I tend to mix in with other skiers during the day.
Even if you don't want to do blacks ski school is a good way to meet others of similar ability with whom you can buddy up as and when suits and the local schools have a decent reputation.
I would suggest enough reds in Niederau for your own ability description and the bus goes to other resorts along the valley for a change of scenery.
Nightlife is not Ibiza but there is sufficient including quiz nights etc to keep you amused in the evenings.
Have not visited the others you mention so can't comment, hth.
