British companies have been offering illegal hosting, which has taken away work from trained professionals. App moves them away from this dubious practice.

It is my understanding that the legality or not of the British model of Ski Hosting is something that the French Courts are looking at, not something that has already been decided.

I am unaware of any deaths to skiers/boarders who have been out with a Ski Host. I am aware of the UCPA qualified (French) instructor who led two of his pupils to their deaths under La Toviere in Tignes......

We should try not to confuse competence with a qualification, that argument only works for those people receiving grandfather rights, which is not your average ski host. Based upon your logic it would be fine for people to drive without a license etc etc.

A guide or instructor does not magically remove the intrinsic danger of skiing offpiste anymore than a pilot being trained. It only guarantees that they will have a predefined level of competence, that has been tested. Something which is impossible to ascertain when you just meet someone off street.

I find it hard to understand
1 why a guide or an instructor is necessary to lead competent skiers around on blue and red runs.
2 Why an instructor or guide would want to spend their time showing skiers around the easy runs when they could be teaching/guiding

I've had some great days out on hosting days, always great fun and to get to know the staff away from the chalet. I've never seen a situation on a hosted day where a guide or instructor was needed.

Ski hosting didn't venture onto black runs let alone off piste.

There seems to be a great deal of confusion over what ski hosting is. If ski professionals think they are going to be busy because of the end to ski hosting they are in for disappointment!

It's getting boring. It's illegal in France end of. All Le Ski is doing with the appeal process is buying the time and creating public opinion. There are people who rely on this work for their income and living and I don't believe that they shouldn't be sidelined in favour of those who do it for fun. Anyway, SCGB is also offering hosting for their members and it will be done not by reps but by qualified personnel, and will be charged for. Like it or not there are two options: want a real person to provide the service, then pay, don't want to pay - there is an app for you, have a nice day. Nothing wrong with it and I always felt baffled by people who like being served but don't like paying for services. It's the catered chalet situation over again.

I know this is just a topic that has run a long time. Its just wrong, typical of the French bureaucratic system to invent a problem that doesn't exist. You don't need an "instructor" to go hill walking or climbing. Whats the difference? I'll tell you what the difference is...The B****y French. They only follow the laws that suit them. In a recent survey it was found that the french only only complied with approx 40% of the mandatory new laws instituted by the EU. UK 95% together with most of the rest of the EU countries. Rant over
