Interesting. I've always found holidaying in the Uk a lot more expensive than going abroad.

We came to that conclusion as well.
I'm a laydee

We 've stayed in a really well appointed beach chalet in Cornwall with mod cons, 2 bedrooms, walking distance to sand dunes and 10 min drive to the beaches for £800 for a family of 4. This was in August. Just the fuel to drive down to Cornwall and food to add to this. Probably no more than about £1,200 for the week or £300pp. Lots of body boarding, bbq's and sand blasted faces!

I would but two things put me off.

VDI @ New year ..... gonna be very busy.
lack of travel.

I did look a VDI not long back and is definitely on my 'to go to' list.
Skied: Arinsal, La Plagne, Alpe D'huez, Flaine, Les Arcs, Morzine, Les Gets, Avoriaz, Sauze, Courchevel, Val Thorens

...and you'd be sharing a chalet with weirdos.....

I think VDI will cope with crowds better than most having experienced the lift system (he says famously). Too late now anyway. Decision has been made and I can get back to some pointless but crucial wibbling.

Please do not take it as if i was criticising your choice, i wasn't. Everywhere is going to be really busy so VDI will be as good as anywhere, as you pointed out.
My wifes biggest fear is crowded pistes so i am hoping to find somewhere quite for NY and then do a super resort in feb. My only hang up is paying top dollar for a resort like valmorel.

Snapzz, I am going to be brutally honest with you on this, and I do not mean in any way to knock Bedrock Barneys choice, as I personally really like Val D'Isere. However, if you ski on the Tignes side from VDI, you only have 3 ski options back to the resort. Two of these are black runs (one being La Face) and the third is the notorious Santons blue run. This is the run which ends up getting about 70% of the return traffic to VDI and funnels through a halfpipe type run. It can be a major pain at the end of the day, especially for someone who is nervous of busy runs.

There are alternate returns which can be used of course. The gondola back down from the top of Bellevarde (I'm really surprised more people do not use this option) or ski down into La Daille and hop on the resort bus up the road to VDI proper.

I am not trying to put you off of VDI, but just giving fair warning of the run home given your comment about your wife.

Far Queue - you're correct about tricky runs back to the Val d'Isere main base. However, my wife is not a particularly strong or confident skier and she simply used the gondolas or chair lifts to come back down at the end of the day (from both Bellevarde and Solaise mountains). Lots of people were doing this. I tended to ski down although was happy to sit back on the chair lift on one occasion when feeling tired! The Santons run was no problem earlier in the day although I could see how tricky it might end up later on.

We also finished off a couple of days in La Daille and jumped on the quick shuttle bus back to the centre.
