Ah ok well you will have a great week i think-i was talking to friends last night and it looks beautiful.

Have you been before? If not and you want to ask anything send me a pm-know quite a few hidden spots for either off piste, relaxing or nice food

Snow Socks are lighter and can be driven on snow and tarmac (but not faster than 50kmh).......they are legal now, but you'd have to know the car you were getting for size. Buy snow chains and you'll have to dump them on return anyway with baggage allowance on plane.

We have some snow socks but haven't had to use them yet. I'm fairly sure that they will fall apart quite quickly if driven on tarmac at any kind of speed.
slippy slidey snow......me likey!

vft,
if you knew what size wheel your car was you could get wheel socks on the net they're light and would fit in your hand luggage they are the same as chains but much easier to fit ..maybe you don't have them in the uk ...

My comment re tarmac and snow socks come from the manufacturers website. It's not that you'd want to drive on tarmac with them in place.....but as long as you don't exceed stated speed limit you can reach next chainage area and remove them.....without fear of damaging them as you would with snow chains. I agree with last comment that they are light enough to put in hand luggage if you know tyre size of hire vehicle.

Dub, I am in Ireland actually ) I don't really have time to worry about it, as I am leaving on Thursday. I'd say, if it snows on Saturday next week when we arrive to Bergamo I'll just drive to the nearest garage and buy chains or whatever they have there. Hopefully, it will not be necessary. Will also ask for chains at the car rental (but it doesn't look great from my previous enquiries).
rossyhead It would be my first time in Bormio or Italian Alps for that matter. We went to the Dolomites last year, and before that we were going to Austria and France all the time. We like checking out new places and rarely go to the same resort twice. I am looking forward to it!

Honestly the drive to Bormio is 90% in tunnels-big wide motorway tunnels. Just take signs for lecco or you'll end up going to scenic route-lovely past lake como but takes ages!
Make sure you take your swimming trunks to visit the Roman baths and def try and visit 'la pozza' its a natural outlet from the Roman baths so is the same volcanic water but free!
You'll enjoy la Rocca for lunch-pizza and a beer for under 10euros! If you're into off piste skiing just look right on your way up to 3000m
i could go on all night, i hope you enjoy it!
