Funny isnt it.
A few short weeks ago people on here were panicking, saying it was the worst start to a season in years, doing dances to convince themselves it would help. Then out of nowhere we get more snow than in 30 years, some places 60 years, so its an epic season we should be celebrating.
Of course, with it comes the associated dangers, but this is skiing.....its not just the nice past time we take part in in the shining sun on perfectly groomed pistes, it has a serious side. With any adverse weather comes travel problems, I should know - I got caught up after heavy snow Jan 2010. But because most of us are used to normal flight, easy transfer, and nicely prepared slopes it seems that this "serious" weather is now actually a problem!!!!

I think we should all remember that what we all want every year is an epic snow year, to be able to ski in powder up to our waists is hard but its what we all aim to be able to do sometime, and we want to see snow covered mountains with white villages.

Yes, there WILL be travel disruptions and it may be difficult for less experienced skiers to ski in the deep snow, but please dont start suggesting for one minute that there is too much snow or that its a problem. We get lucky picking the week we go - those that chose pre Xmas didnt on reflection make a great choice, and those who went over Xmas and New Year look like they had the opposite and struggled with the amount of snow that fell. Its all part of the madness of skiing, and trying to pick when to travel. Early Jan is my usual time, but this year we have picked 22nd for some reason and it may or may not pay off in the end, time will tell.

In the meantime, enjoy it those of you out there or just going out. You may not see conditions like this for years.

To be fair, it was the worst start to a season for some time.

Yes it was, but far too many people were impatient and predicted doom and gloom. Now look at it!!!!

Agreed. Apparently it was a pretty bad year for snow where I went last year, and I was more than happy. In fact it was the best ski holiday we've had. They've had more snow in the last two weeks than the entire season last year, so to say I'm excited about going back is some what of an understatement! 21 more sleeps.

I had the same experience. I went 16th Jan last season when many in France and Switzerland were skiing in meadows. I had the best snow I've skied on and an utterly fantastic weeks skiing. However I wont be returning there as it was pretty much a once in a lifetime trip to St Moritz and its ridiculously expensive to have a holiday there. But like you, I was flying around on amazing snow whilst many were struggling to ski after midday or more than halfway down the mountain. Funny old world, isnt it?
