im not sure if im more concerned with crowds than the average skiier, but at Treble Cone I am used to generally skiing pretty much straight onto the lift. I am aware that under normal conditions its less likely in the Alps though
sorry for all the trouble, I feel so naive!

Picking the correct resorts from the other side of the planet needs plenty of research!
Val d'Isere is big and bold. Together with Tignes, it's a wide ski area. There is tons of lift accessible off piste, but be aware there are significant risks in following tracks made by others.
Henry's Avalanche Talks is a good place to visit to read up on the area, tons of photos and articles. Henry has been resident for many years.

Again, a local Mountain Guide will show you the best of any area matched to your party's skill level.

The resort has less to offer for non skiers, when compared to Chamonix. The village is smart and has plenty of shops, there will be walks,Snowshoeing, and possibly Dog Sledding to do.

There's some info on off-piste sking in Val d'Isere here: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dennis.summerbell/skiing/valintro.html

Another possibility would be the Monterosa Ski Area (Alagna/Gressoney/Champoluc) combined with either Verbier or Chamonix lots of off-piste (40'0000 ha) but unfortunately very little for non skiers.

Val D'Isere is absolutely fantastic in every way. I was lucky enough to learn to ski there and it is the best overall holiday I've every had in my life. I'm currently planning a European ski trip for 2015 with family and we thought we might try somewhere different but we just can't go past Val. We have done the Club Med when we were there which I was dubious about but it was fantastic - excellent food and good facilities.
