It's a horrible Americanism that is creeping into the beautiful English language.
I believe you can only buy the Swiss Transfer Pass in advance, from the United Kingdom, so try the Swiss Travel Centre website to purchase online.

Well LOTA I hate Americanisms too but I have to admit I didn't realise train station was one of them!
Thanks for all the links. Will definitely get the transfer ticket but I'm just a bit confused that it's not a booking for a particular train - you just choose your first travel date and then get on any train, is that right?? Thanks all.

The Swiss Transfer Ticket can only be purchased before you arrive in Switzerland. Generally a ticket has a year long validity. No reservations for seats or individual trains with this ticket.
You mark the ticket with your 1st day of travel, then it expires 30 days later, by which time you will have made a 2nd entry for your return trip.
When on your train, present your ticket along with your passport to the train staff.

From Geneva Aiport you need a train that goes to Brig and stops at Visp.It leaves every hour, sometimes twice per hour, you can find out at www.cff.ch. From Visp take the train that goes straight to Zermatt. this is the easiest and cheapest way. If you rent a car you will still need to take the train as cars are not allowed in Zermatt. I don't understand why worry about transfers when Switzerland has one of the best train and public transport systems in the world. This is how most people travel here and no-one got lost yet:)

And you can purchase the train ticket right at the station from the machine. Choose English language and follow directions on the screen.

Buy a Swiss Rail transfer ticket in the UK before you go (not for sale in Switzerland) It should cost about £80 for the return trip.
