Hi Sharonshinwell, 51b is probably around whatever lift is numbered 51 but I'm sure there's also run 51, 51a and 51c! You'll find it on the map somewhere around where the blue 43 starts. The blue run back to the village is fine. It is mostly a track although there are a couple of bits your friend might find slightly steep-ish. We had a timid skiier with us as well and she managed fine. When you come out from the trees at the top of the first gondola, head for the gap between the two gondolas and veer slightly left. This will take you down to an area where there is 4 chairs and the blue to Soll is accessed from there. If you go up on the two seater chair there is a nice little blue your friend could try and its short as well. There's another nice short blue (I think it's shown as a red on the map) which is virtually flat at the top going onto a short red which is accessed from one of these 4 chairs. I can't remember the number but when you come down to the 4 chairs, it's the one straight in front of you.

Got back Soll yesterday. Loads of snow when we were there and it was tipping down when we left. Very impressed with the Skiwelt area. Our group has used Schladming for the past 5 years and I can compliment Soll in saying the skiing was on a par with there.Where Soll scored very highly was in the Apres scene even for a group of 50+ year olds.
We stayed in the Postwirt which was superb. There were 2 bars in the hotel. Quiet one opposite reception or 20 metres further on which had live music 3 nights a week. Small but great atmosphere.
We used the Salven Stadl as our maine base camp bar, great live music. Everyone kept on forgetting its name so it was called "The Cross Roads Bar"!
Used the Whiskey Mule a few times, slightly more expensive and younger crowd. They take the Mick by only charging entry 4 Euros on Fridays as they know everyone will be out later as most are going home Saturday.
Saw a 2 piece band I think called 'Fog on the Tyne' 3 times, very very good. Geordie Lad and a French girl. They are doing the rounds in other Austrian resorts, so well worth a see if they are where you are staying.
Excellent time had by all. Would we go back- to damn right we would.
Dont get put off with the bus thing to the gondolaa. Sunday morning with everyome and his dog trying to get on it in the morning was busy, but everydayafter that no waiting at all. Walk up to the gondola 10 minutes but you will be working up a seat. We walked down everyday to the Salven Stadl in a leasurely stroll.

I know you have often dismissed Soll on this forum. IIRC, your concerns related primarily to risk of poor snow, the distance of the main lift from the village and crowds.

1. Snow: Yes, the resort is relatively low but in practical terms most of the skiing is done between about 1200m and 1600m. With much of this North facing, I think it holds its snow pretty well, though you do tend to get the thaw/freeze conditions common to most lower-lying resorts. In 3 years, I have always had pretty decent conditions and I suspect the worst you would get is runs down to the resort closed and some ice up higher. While I haven't been to your beloved Mayrhofen, I get the impression it is somewhat similar  .

2. Distance to Village: not a problem. There is accommodation near the gondola but even if you don't stay there, it is a short enough walk from the village - the key is to rent a locker at the gondola and then you do not have to walk in ski boots or carry skis - think of the walk as your warm-up or warm-down exercise. You can always get the bus if feeling lazy

3. Crowds: What crowds? Maybe at half-term but certainly not anytime I have been there  . On the contrary, I have rarely experienced even a short queue, except one time when virtually all lifts were closed due to a storm. Definitely yes in the apres ski bars buts that different obviously:lol:

Overall, I think it is a very decent resort. There is extensive skiing for all levels throughout the very well linked villages with a good modern lift system. If I had a criticism, it is that many of the runs are quite short, certainly compared with, say, somewhere like ADH. Again, I would have thought that Mayrhofen is quite similar in this respect.

Would you like it? Yes, I think you would, though you might start to get bored towards the end of a full week - probably better bet for a long weekend. Is is as good as St Anton? No way - but it is much, much cheaper.

Thanks for that mate, appreciated.
It does however only go to confirm why I have in the past ignored it as a place to go for a week: low lying, icy, limited and short runs, distance from the resort. I do appreciate why you like it, and maybe someday I will visit it to see for myself. But 1200-1600m skiing is not for me. Mayrhofen is mainly 1500m lowest up to 2500m, and most if it around 1800m to 2000m. Having said that, I have never been later than late Feb.
If I had the flexibility to go for a long weekend after a heavy dump of snow, Soll would be perfect I imagine.
In the meantime, I'll give it a miss and head for other places on the radar including Arabba/Val Gardena, Zermatt, Wengen/Murren, Les Arcs/La Plagne, Ischgl, Champoluc, and a few others to be looked at in more detail.
Thanks for the post though.

Just got back from Soll, loved the place. Tony_H do not even consider going to the Schladming area then! (Which I would also recommend) as the Skiwelt area is very similar.Even for good skiers there's plenty to ski over a week. As for location from gondolla to town, get over it, it was a 10 minute walk at most. Icey slopes!! Then I must have missed them all. Went to Mayrhofen last Xmas had a great time but queues just to get up the mountain and back down as well as a couple of pinch points on the Penken where we had to queue for 20 minutes plus.I know you say if your up the mountain by 8.15 you will miss them, but we are also on holiday!!
We were out of the hotel by 9am and actually skiing every day a little after 9.30.
Would I go back to Mayrhofen - No Back to Soll definately!!
P.S. If you are nervous of sheer heights then the Penken gondolla on a clear day is a tester as it goes between 2 peaks, and it is high!!! Think you will agree with that Tony!!
