Have a look at "Mappy" It is a little known route planner but a very good one. I do a lot of European driving and use it in conjunction with my sat nav.
Safe trip :D

@finn, wickers. the winmdscreen wash freezing up was the only problem we experienced. tightly gripping the steering wheel, trying not to wipe the windscreen as it just smeared the road salt everywhere. having to pull over every 45km, hand clean the windows then start again. great great journey though and would do it again for any trip lasting more than 10 days.
If anyone interested the vw transporter, chunnel costs, petrol from cheltenham to north italy and back with 2 people on the way out, a fair bit of driving whilst there, and returning with 5 people and what looked like tons of luggage came to £545 all in. Brilliant economy. less than hiring a decent vehicle for 2 weeks. i think the real economy came in making sure we had the emptiest tank possible for filling up in Luxembourg at 82 pence, yes read it and weep, 82 pence per litre.
Off to tignes - by plane - in a couple weeks. Going to geneva though ( i know but original plan was Morzine ) and hire car co. saying we have to have snowchains. I am in agreement over this as but was planning to take my own as don't want to pay out 40 eurogroats to hire more. anyone know if they'll be happy with the fact i have my own??
once again, thanks for all the help before we went.
