All of which is why my boots are safely packed away in my suitcase every trip, so there can be no ifs or buts.

Yeah maybe that's a better idea than carrying them on board. Don't really want to have to open my case in the middle of the baggage hall!

If you pack them in your suitcase surely it is no different to packing them in a boot bag, if your nervous you can still protect them in a boot bag, its up to the individual I suppose :D

My only worry is my case getting lost. My ski boots are brand new and my very first pair so i'd be devastated if they didn't get to resort with me. Not worried about losing the rest of my stuff i'll ski naked as long as i have my lovely new boots with me haha :P

Not if you are flying. 1 suitcase, boots safely packed and padded with clothing
or
1 suitcase and a boot bag, not as well protected and padded generally, plus its another bag to carry, and a real pain if you have a ski bag too. It also raises the chances of something going missing, someone taking them, or them getting damaged. I never ever understood people taking boot bags on flights - you should see the way they get thrown about, you might want to reconsider!

In thirty years I have never lost anything or had any damage to my ski gear, and certainly I have never left a case on the bus

It all depends on them coming down the conveyor in the arrivals hall, or going to (n) destination...or finding a new home before they appear on Ebay....or having BA sell them in an Auction House in London in 3 months time.

But your case can get thrown about there is not a lot you can do about that, don't forget I ski fly once a year and I don't pad out my ski or boot bag, never had any damage
