oh noooo!!!! info overload....too confused...aaarggh
I too like snowb4ndit read all the info about packing ski boots and having carefully wrapped mine up in towels etc. within boots bags and then in the case to fly out to MontG on Sunday, what to do now??!!
We are flying with Neilson (Thomson) so I assume we can take as hand luggage although bit heavy and unwieldy to be luggging around.
As snowb$dit's trouble seems to be "human" error should I leave my lovely packing in tact or re-think my tactics??
(I am assuming B'ham airport will be open this Sunday of course the snow is blanketing down here in Worcester!)
Any one else in MontG area next week?

 I think you mean 'husband' error.
I've flown with Thomson on many an occasion and there was no problem with boots in hand luggage. As I said I will endeavor to keep my boots with me at all times during travelling (even more so now!), but I think I am in the minority. Suitcases don't go astray that often. Do whatever you feel most comfortable with. :D

You mean, you picked the wrong husband, or your husband made an error?

I am hoping that because we are going with Monarch that there will be no delays to our flight and we are flying at 2pm so hopefully they will get it all up and running should the predicted snow fall arrive.
Ha. If only. Monarch are a charter airline, and if there is going to be a delay, it will be to a charter flight as they pay less for their slots. If there are delays because of the weather, our flight will almost certainly be delayed. Monarch are rarely on time when the sun is shining.

Unfortunately, there does not seem to any consistency on whether you can carry skiboots as part of hand luggage with different rules and interpretations being applied by different airlines and by airports. As bandit says, it is not just the airline that you have to worry about - it is also airport security and just because your departure airport allowed you take on does not mean that security at the returning airport will do so ....... aaarrrgghhhh!
Then if you have to repack (assuming you have room in your checked bags), you have to watch out for overweight charges. I suspect many airlines are now making more out of luggage than out of ticket sales!
Furthermore, the same dilemma arises for helmet wearers. A pal of mine was not allowed bring his helmet through security in Chambery and had to go back out to check it in. AS you don't go through security in Chambery until your flight is ready to board, this did give rise to some anxious moments!
