We normally go skiing with my kids school ski party, and often wait until nearer the departure time before we book it. This time they're going during the Easter break instead of February half term so I thought we had plenty of time to get things organised, but when I rang today to book us in I got told because we'd left it late the operator would apply a supplement of £100 per person  That makes it £4000 for 2 adults and 2 kids for a week in Austria in April

That £amount is madness! Have you already paid? Sure sounds like one very expensive vacation. The TOs are struggling to sell Easter ski vacations at book price, expect discount packages via the net real soon.
My sympathies on the amount.....

No I haven't paid anything and I don't intend to go now. We'll do something on our own as a family for less than that at a better time as well I reckon. I was really concerned about going so late in the season anyway, I'm not paying extra for it!!!!

Shop around or sort out a DIY vacation. In these challenging times the TOs have got to start discounting sooner rather than later.
Because of the way Easter falls this year, alot of resorts will stay open well into April. Late season skiing can be fantastic. Good luck....
