I am looking for a GPS unit for use when I am skiing, it should to be able to show speed in MPH as I have always been interested in how fast I ski, and have the usual stuff altimeter etc.
Does anybody out there have any experience of these devices and could perhaps recommend a unit.

Suunto have other GPS models and any GPS with track logs can probably do the same thing although you'll find unreliable on short distances, ie less than a few km and generally unreliable without a barometric altimeter anyway. If you want to ski fast for some fun there's publicly open races in France like the flèche and you'll get a badge or medal for that. It may be safer to find out how fast you're going on a race course than an open piste as well of course.
More to the point, why? There must be something better to spend money on, measuring your ski day by how far or how fast you've been may miss the point. You don't need any expensive gadget to measure how good the day was or what you did or who you were with except a camera :)
I do this in my head. Usually at the lift station there is info on the run length. Get off the lift at the top, stick your iPod on with a long tune you know well, set off when the song starts and note where the song is at the bottom, then its a case of simple maths to work out average speed and a some basic reasoning to guess top speed from that based on the style of your skiing/riding.

Thanks Tony_H for your response the only one that really suits my needs is a Discontinued Suunto S, so I'm thinking now shall I'll or shall i not, but I suspect I will.

I'm no speed freak, never had an injury in 32 years, but I have always had an interest in " I wonder how fast I skied that run", I agree that is not what skiing for me is all about.
But after all is said and done I do love a gadget.

Your right a simple calculation that is all that is needed, but I am simple!!!!!!
