Pablo,
What's a rental bucket?

Rental boots with far too much space in them - like having your foot in a bucket. I have recent experience (unfortunately) of 'high end' rental boots, the smallest I could get my feet in to, and can safely say they are hopeless. I am willing to cast the net far enough to say they are all hopeless - probably. My skiing really suffered, found it fairly difficult to control the ski.

Thanks Pablo for clarifying that.

It would be nice if I could try out a well fitting boot without actually having to buy it

You will get to the point very quickly, if you are not already there, where your boots are seriously holding you back. IMO one of the biggest single things you can do in a day to improve your skiing. Then again I feel that trying to persuade you of this is akin to flogging a dead horse.

Unless you were intending to ski in the boot, what would be the point? It's impossible to tell how good or not a boot is fitting unless it is fitted to your foot.

You certainly can't tell by standing in a new boot in a shop.

Bandit,
That's the whole problem. It's not like buying ready made boots. I don't suppose anyone would want to make me a boot that fits me, let me try it out (on a snow dome if in the U.K.), and then have me say that (perhaps) it doesn't make any difference.

I bought my own boots from Intersport France. Had my eye on a nice expensive pair, but the shop expert said I had the wrong shaped foot for them, and I ended up getting a half price pair for about £40. They are SO comfortable, and very pleased I bought them!

I hated hire boots, and always ended up with really sore ankles, to the point where I struggled to get my foot into the boot.

Hi Gadgetgirl,
£40 for a pair of boots is amazingly cheap! Well done for getting such a comfy pair
We hired ours from Intersport in 1550 and paid about £100 for the 'noir' boots and skis for 7 days.

I think my main problem would be carting them about. We are already fully loaded with luggage as it is and we have to do a lot of travelling on trains and the underground. It wouldn't be so bad if we went back to the same resort every year because I suppose I could pay one of the hire shops to store my boots for me, but my daughter likes going to different resorts - although she liked Courchevel so much that she wants to go back there next year.

I have also been put off buying any boots by the numerous posts from people who have bought boots only to find they're exremely uncomfortable once they try ski-ing in them. And I only ski for about a week, or maybe 2 weeks, at the most each year.
