Couple of seasons ago, had my bindings set too lightly, entered a deep snow section, hit something under thes now, and stepped out of the ski. The snow was to soft for the brake to work. Followed the track and found the ski buried 2oo metres below.

I always tend to notch my dins up abit before i hit the powder so fortunatly never had to go fishing for my skis.

exactly, that's what I meant above when I commented there are worse things than losing your skis some days, on some days in some places moving the DIN up or locking out completely on dynafits is a good idea for an experienced skier.

There's also a common tendency to ski with DIN's too low which is not only dangerous but a habit that needs breaking before progressing to any more serious off piste.

Yep i went skiing off piste with some instructors in fernie and their dins were around 10-12, i've always thought its much better for your skis to stay on while skiing steep off piste powders
