Perhaps you could ask a Chemist to suggest some cream for the recurrent itching :P

Until you are sure you are hoohed I would avoid expensive gear. Layers are the key. A semi decent wind/waterproof with a gilLet and fleece underneath is just as effective as a designer ski jacket and much more versitile and can be used in other situations. Don't skimp on gloves especially for kids .If you do buy cheap ones get two pairs so you can change into a dry pair if they get wet and cold.
I always carry spare gloves and hat. If you are miles from base and drop a glove, spares will save the day.
