Hi CL,

Now before I start I must explain that I live in Niederau and I chose to live here out of all the places I could in the world. So just be warned that my comments may not represent the views of the majority.

As to your question it would be very helpful to know what you are looking for from your ski holiday and something about how you ski and the things that you enjoy.

Niederau was recently voted the 2nd best ski resort in the Alps for beginners and 5th in the world on the same basis, so if you are a beginner, you are in luck!

Personally I think that this fact distorts the range of skiing available. There are runs that advanced skiers do well to make look easy and (if you know where to go) there are some great un-pisted runs.

However, Niederau is not a big resort, doesn’t have dozens of runs and it’s quite possible to ski every piste at least once well before the end of a short day. The nightlife is limited and if you snowboard then let’s hope you like pomas and T-Bars … There’s only one gondola and a single chair otherwise.

So, give us some more info about your needs and I will try to give you an unbiased opinion of how you will enjoy Niederau.

Jan

thanks from your advance.

I just wonder how far from the SKI ET BOARD MARGRETER SHOP to the hotel Harfenwirt

I am staying the Harfenwirt hotel.

What are you doing in there? Are you a intructor?

Ah, now, you are asking a different question but one that I'm happy to answer!

It's about 850m (just Google Earthed it) from the Harfenwirt to Margreiter's shop (http://www.ski-margreiter.at). I assume you will be hiring your kit on day one and returning it on your last day. The Harfenwirt is located just opposite a brand new lift and I would imagine you would do best to keep your kit at the Harfenwirt and just jump on the new lift and go, rather than taking you kit back to Margreiter's every night ;)

As for what I’m doing here, well that’s a long story, but if you PM me I’ll happily catch up with you in the village and share my story over a beer :D

Happy hols,

Jan

There are three hire places in Niederau, Thalers, Margreiter, and Blachfelder. The Harfenwirt may offer you a ticket to obtain a discount from Thaler, but from several friends' experiences, the service is not good, and the range and quality of the equipment is lacking.

I would give Blachfelders the edge over Margreiter, but not a great deal in them. I get my services carried out at Margreiter, and, will continue to do so, after winning a bet with Eric, (the manager) that I could not ski down the Mercenwiess last year, the day after it had rained, and turned to ice. By my reckoning we will both have long grey beards and be incapable of remembering our names by the time the bet is paid off.

I don't know your standard, but if you are free skiing, you can ski back to the Harfenwirt at night, and catch the T bar up in the morning, then ski down to the village.

I did four seasons in Niederau in times past, and it is a wonderful, magical village. I have two weeks in late Jan, and two weeks at end of season.

Don't miss a visit or two to the Bichlwirt, 100m up from the Harf. It has a 500 year history, Maria is welcoming, and Herbert plays good harp stuff most nights.

Jan ~ new lift opposite the Harfenwit? There was new short beginner T bar there last year. Is that the one, or is there a new one? Niederau is crying out for a chairlift right up the Tenladen to meet the Mittermoos T bar at the top.

Hi Dave,

The new button lift runs from Grafenweg right up to the bottom of the short schuss just below the reservoir and is called the Ubungslift Tennladen.

For simplicity have a look here for an indication of what I’m talking about ) www.auhof.co.uk/New_Lift.asp

As for a chair on the Tennladen I haven’t heard about that but I do understand that the single chair is to be replaced with a 4-man jobbie going to the top of the Gipfel which should make the whole western end of the resort more accessible and reduce the load on the Marchenwiesen and Tennladen.

Oh and by the way another day is dawning here cold and crisp and sunny – Makes for perfect skiing !!
