Yes, as per Jan's comments,
take the kids along to ski school, warm and well kitted out, leave them with the instructor, smile and walk away.
I've found that the 'right' age can depend, sometimes, on the build of the child. if he/she is bigger, and more robust-looking, then they'll often take to skis easier then a very small, slightly built child, whatever the age. But this is a huge generalisation.
speak confidently to your child when the instructor is around, and give the child the impression that this is what YOU want, and that the instructor is in charge.
please, please, don't be late picking up your child at the end of ski school. this can be really unsettling for a small child/a young mind. Be there when you say you will be.
