For the "non-professional" this is actually a really useful tip.

Although I'm sure everyone would welcome your helpful, positive, inclusive, knowledgeable advice ...

I genuinely thought you were joking when I started to read that, and I apologise for not taking you seriously.

If you want some helpful, positive, inclusive, knowledgeable advice, which you obviously don't, then don't jack the car up on the side of snowy mountain to put chains on, it's totally silly and recklessly dangerous on an sloped icy surface.

Personally, I don't fit chains much more than anyone else in fact probably less, once last year and many years not at all. I have not ever needed to jack the car up to do it nor have I needed to position the car wheels to get the chains off.

In your defence I can only assume you've got some really old chains and haven't followed your own advice to practice with them at home.

If you prefer to remove the wheels and take them indoors and fit chains in the comfort of indoors then please be my guest.

I guess that
Point 1 is totally useless if you don’t follow point 2.- using a car jack on anything but flat, dry ground is probably going to end your happy holiday quicker than you had planned.
passed you by

Oh MY God!!!

I've started a flame site with what I thought was a really simple question. Mind you, I took the advice I was given and the last time someone asked about Snow Sock the same thing happened.

Ho Hum.

By the way, my Golf is a company car, it's exactly as VW put it together, standard 17" wheels, No big exhaust (in fact no visible exhaust at all) no extra spoilers and only 140ps.

I've looked into the possibility of buying a second set of wheels but ones that will fit are either huge diameter or over £200, winter tyres also seem to be over £50 each giving a minimum spend of £400. Spikes Spider chains that will fit (because they have no fittings on the inside of the tyre) and are £240. So all things considered I'll leave the Golf at home and take the Merc instead with a set of chains that cost less than £30. Particularly as I've driven 3 times before and never had to drive on the snow, the chains just being extra ballest at the back of the boot, so if I do use them and they only last for this holiday it will take 12 trips with new chains each time before I'm out of pocket.

Again thanks for the advice everyone.

Live each day as if it's your last, you never know what tommorrow brings!

Personally I liked bandit's comment the best...

Anyway I'm jacking this thread up (on dry, level ground) while the storm passes... move along now...
