"Hi there, been to Niederau before?"
"No, this is my first time skiing."
"Great, are you in class tomorrow then?"
"No, my uncle/dad/brother/ is going to teach me"
"Hmm"

Three days later...
"Hi there, did you enjoy your skiing today?"
"Mmm, I had the day off today, my knee's a bit sore"
"Oh, OK, well you you can get back to it tomorrow"
"Oh well, I've decided to go to Innsbruck tomorrow"

I always suggest... Invest in lessons for three years, so as to become a good skier. Then go free-skiing.

In this context, I am defining "good skiing" as skiing correctly and in control.

Spot on.

However, I have even heard the following reason/excuse for not going in class -

I used to be a good skateboarder, so I'm sure I can ski/board as well. (yes, really.)

There are occasionally folks who can just ski really well, whilst the rest of us flounder through ski school.
Here's one such fella, skiing down to the Moiry Barrage. It's very much off piste, deep snow, around a 30 degree pitch and on that day, quite crusty.
He had most of a week in ski school...way back.No tuition since.

He is very, very, good on his planks, and I wish I could just ski. Very relaxed style, looks effortless.

Of cause there is Tony but i did say ( some men ) I dont tar everyone with the same brush. The women on the other hand ( some women not all ) just like to look pretty on the slopes, Latest trends, Performance gear.
But you wont find them doing any skiing oh no, Its not lady like to break sweat  and that leaves the rest of us to just get on with it and try to improve on what we have already learnt.

For some people, a learning method called guided/self discovery works extremely well. There are some conditions that ease that process. First being that they are an independent learner and another being peer example. These people quickly identify a group to participate with, that will stretch thier skills. I believe that while there are some drawbacks to learning this way, there some less obvious advantages. The way the concepts of understanding formed in this learners mind are not tied to the specifics of a formal lesson and so are free to be applied as needed. As opposed to using concept for the conditions as taught. People who thrive on discovery learning also seem to "go big". Now whether this is because they are naturals or because they do not suffer inhibitions picked up during formal instruction depends on the person. Generally though, they seem to see less roadblocks to progressing thier skills.

The above type oftens resembles the "I don't need lessons type", but is not a redneck. Did you know that 99% of people will shout "OH S@#T" just befor they drive off the road into a ditch. The other 1% are rednecks and they shout "hold my beer a moment, this is gonna be fun".

I've never had a ski lesson, and I don't think it is because I am so macho that I can't sink to that level. My primary learning method is reading, imagining, and practicing! Haha! Of course, the fact that I don't even see most of the instructor staff carving at my local resort doesn't help.

Interestingly, I had a friend visit this year, and he wanted to board. He had never done it, but he skateboards(Yeah, that didn't help much. :). He didn't want to take lessons, so, I tried to guide him the best I could with my small knowledge of boarding. He is one of the most amazingly gifted athletes! We went three days, and his improvement was astounding! Very good control - he was doing blue runs with ease, and we did a couple runs on a black. Sure he fell every now and then, but always in control, understood his edges, and just got it. He tells me that when he skateboards now - he is always thinking about "carving" his turns.

I'm not trying to be negative on lessons! I think they are a great thing! But, there are some who just learn a little differently. But, that is what makes it interesting: it can be a creative sport. :)

Trencher - I know some people like your redneck!!!!

I had one and gave up an hour into it. Like you Dshenberger it's not because I am trying to be macho, I just don't respond very well to direction, it was a problem I had a school and it has only got worse as I have gotten older )

I taught myself on a quiet slope after I had committed to a weeks ski pass and board hire, being Scottish I was not gonna waste that money even though I hated it at first.

I would not classify myself as anything more than a confident begginner. I have done 30 or so days since I started 18 months ago. I can board classically, switch and ride fakie with no problems. I play on blues when I am tired, I spend most of my time on reds enjoying the world going by, and strive off onto black to test myself. I have recently started a little off piste. Don't bother with the jumps and the park, I wear pants that fit. My carving leaves somewhat to be desired, but I read Trenchers stuff carefully and will put the theory into practice soon.

I have had 2 accidents, and both times I was hit by and out of control person (1 boarder, 1 skier). Fortunately they were both quite cute and I forgave them :D

I think there are all kinds of people out there, some do respond well to training, others learn a lot faster by making mistakes. As long as you do not endanger anyone else whilst doing it, it can be a rapid way to learn. Some of us are more scientific and don't get the best out of being told do this do that, they need to work it out for themselves, tinker around, figure out what works best.

Some people are also natural risk takers, and I am a little like this also. Although my experience on an icy and empty black in Mayrhofen after only 6 days boarding was petrifying, worse than doing a freefall jump from 14,000 ft into cloud! BT, this black run was not bravado, it was a mistake :) I do like to take risks, and I must say I do like speed, but I do not do this when there is anyone else around, the thought of risking anyone else scares me rigid, and for that reason I have never learnt to drive!!

My snowboarding mirrors my work and career. I gave up University after 18 months, was studying Applied Physics, and went to work 10 hours a day in a chemical suit and gas mask. For a long time I could not rise above that, but now I am a senior manager for a international medical company in a foreign country, I have 40 staff.

For a week I could not cope with the most gentle of slopes, but now........ well lets just say it's like being in love!!!

For some, figuring out how to do it yourself leads to exponential learning.

Ironically I work in risk management....lol

Tino,
Then risk and risk some more.

If it was easy we would give up skiing! That is why we do so,,,that feeling that,,,,,well, just around the corner will be that "dip",,that surprise nature has for us!

Keep on going to edge! ( just know your own limits)
