1.5.hrs to airport (depends where you live of course)
2.0 hrs check-in
2.0 hrs flight with taxiing etc
0.5 hrs baggage reclaim
1.5 hr transfer (long one this year!)

Hmmm. 7.5 hours to St Anton flying out of Stansted for me.

I like.

I don't see any hanging about time waiting for flights to come in :!: :!:

I'm banking on a bus for us and a bus for the Worzels on the Brizzle flight

ok, I'll play..

1.0 hrs to local train station
1.5 hrs to St Pancras
1.0 hrs check in for Eurostar
8.0 hrs train journey to Bourg St Maurice
1.0 hr transfer

12.5 hrs in total door to door

More travel time that I'd thought to be honest although it doesn't feel like 12 hours when you are sat on comfy Eurostar seats. The St Pancras experience is vastly superior (IMHO) to any airport.

I suspect we could shave a couple of hours off this timescale if we flew but not worth it for us unless we plan to visit resorts further away from Bourg.

We're flying to Norway for skiing at Easter via Humberside/Amsterdam/Oslo which should be an interesting comparison.

slippy slidey snow......me likey!

Railway station, Barney, not a train station!!!!

So:

1.5 hours to airport;

.25 hours parking/shuttle

.75 hours check-in and wait (scheduled flight, of course)

1.5 hours flight

.25 hours baggage (Swiss airport, of course)

.25 hours wait for train

2.25 hours train journey.

Five minutes walk to hotel!

Total: Seven hours tops. Fly at 6am, skiing by 12.30!

Thats the bit that puts me off. I did overnight Eurostar to Moutiers 10 years ago, they still run the same rolling stock I believe. I have to say it was particularly uncomfortable, those seats for such a long period of time were not good. And the smells being produced from around the carriage....rank!

Anyway, looks like we all have our own preferences for how to travel.

I'll take a flight any time, but happy to drive provided I can split the costs with someone.

I'll be interested to hear how the original poster finds the weekend travelling on the coach.

Well on travel to the skiing the best I can do goes something like this ....

40mins to airport
20mins - parking, check in etc.
2 hours flight
20mins for customs and baggage etc.
10mins taxi to hotel
30mins check in, get changed ...
15mins for skis to be sorted and lift pass

and .......
then the white stuff.

I may have been a little optimistic on one or two points so let's say 5 hours home to snow!

I did a couple of long coach trips and likened them to the worst hangover you'll ever have.

(1) You stagger out the other side like the walking dead
(2) Pounding head
(3) Aching limbs
(4) Dehydrated
(5) Smelling like a student flat

And…

(6) Swearing to the God of your choice "I promise I'll never do that again…"

But then next week someone says "We're too full to drink more beer, shall we break out the shots?" or "Fancy a kayak trip?" and you mind says "it wasn't really that bad was it?" and off you go again…

That was a while ago so coach seats and air conditioning should have improved. Are things better now? I'm tempted as our local ski club does a coach trip once a year...

Owen.
