I'm given to understand the lifts at Zermatt open on Saturday, and I may just happen to be in the vacinity. ;)
Anyone know if there are any festivities planned - google isnt telling me anything.

A cab from GVA to Zermatt will be quite seriously expensive and take 3 hours+ to get as far as Tasch, then you'll have to get the train. Much better to take the train GVA to Visp, then change for Zermatt. If money is no object, enquire about a Helicopter transfer, much quicker.
Train takes three and a half to four hours.

Hey TP,
Lived in Zermatt for a couple of seasons, there was never usually a big event, but always lots going on. Paparella Pub will be a good choice for Apres Ski. Zermatt is never boring but a few businesses use November to close down for a month before the mass influx of tourists. Proper ski resort in my opinion!

It's 236 km from Geneva to Zermatt which takes just over 3 hours to drive. A taxi will cost you about 500 Francs the taxi will take you to Zermatt, there is a road from Täsch but a permit is needed to use it. A one way first class train ticket costs 162 Francs, second class 95 Francs. Helicopter transfers with Air Zermatt cost 5000

Given all that info I'd opt for the helicopter! Seriously, 2nd class train is the only otion. Just don't leave bags unguarded around lake Geneva, big scams. After the lake, you can leave your money tied to a post, it won't go missing.

My man in Cervinia reckons his transfer is 3hrs so doesn't sound like I gain any time going to Zermatt.

A taxi transfer from GVA to Cervinia takes about 2.5 hours and costs 800 chf, there is no viable public transport alternative. On the plus side accommodation, food, drink and lift passes are much cheaper there than in Zermatt.
