Yet more heavy snowfall has been reported from North America, with some West Coast ski areas reporting up to 1 metre of fresh in the past week.

The overall situation in Europe has not yet changed (but see below), although some Scandinavian resorts reported some decent falls this week. In The Alps, the best conditions remain to the South of the main Alpine ridge with Cervinia opening 1,500 metres of vertical.

Elsewhere the SkiWelt and other resorts in Austria have delayed their openings, although cooling temperatures have allowed more snow-making here and in France.

European Weather and Snow This Coming Week

It does look, at last, as if the snow drought is about to break. Temperatures and pressures are forecast to fall this weekend, with light precipitation in many areas through to Monday. Scattered and light snow showers are possible across much of the region, with snow falling as low as 1,500 metres from Saturday onwards.

After the weekend, the freezing level across most of The Alps should fall further - perhaps to 1,100 metres by Monday evening - and the forecast models are indicating heavy snowfalls in many areas by then. At present the heaviest snows look likely to fall to the Northern Alps, although the forecast will change in detail as we go through the next few days.

Further bands of snow look likely to pass through the Alpine region later next week and significant local accumulations are likely.

Resort Cameras

We now include over 3,000 web cams on our pages, and will be adding hundreds more over the next few days - so drop in to J2Ski regularly to see where the snow's falling!

1,100 metres is not that low? It freezes here at home and that is probably only a couple hundred metres above sea level?

EDIT: 1,322 Ft to be exact....403metres
