Hi Dave,

I've been looking to do the same for January 2012. There are many variants depending on when you are going for best snow conditions etc. If your opt for Salzburg then there is Schladming with a direct train link to the resort however, at 720m it not the highest and you would be looking for a powder week. A higher resort near to Salzburg (1 hour/90k) is Obertauern. This is higher and should prove more snow sure at approx 1700m. If you opt for Innsbruck you are spoilt for choice with the likes of Obergurgl, Solden, St Anton, Lech, Zurs to name just a few. They are all, I think, within 2 hours of the airport. Austria has a good network of trains and maybe worth considering. Please keep us informed as it may assist others with their DIY.
I just love the gravitational pull

Hi - there rare good trains from Salzburg. You could make for Bischofshofen or Radstadt and from there you can get to Wagrain, Flachau, Altenmarkt/Zauchensee (also high altitude) (and Schladming). Buses run from the stations but I'm not sure how you would co-ordinate times. We often go to Schladming and usually get a taxi. It's around 100 Euros each way so not cheap but you don't need transport once you get to Schladming as everything is easy to get to. We use Taxi Thaler in Rorhmoos.
Teh tarin is good fun though if you can get the timings right.
Enjoy the planning.

Flew to Salzburg from Stanstead £35 flight return. Stayed in Zell am Zee. Firstly Got the bus from Airport to bahnhoff 2 Euros, Train to Zell am Zee 14 Euros. Taxis to hotel 7 euros. Great skiing resort with the use of Kaprun Glazier as well

Why are you thinking of doing it this way Goppy? Is it to make it cheaper, because I don't think, from the limited exploration I have made, that it does work out cheaper. Perhaps there is another reason for you wanting to do it DIY, so fine.
