Hi All,

Off to Val Thorens on the 29th so am now officially doing no work and all ski gazing.....

Been to VT before and found that getting over to the Courchevel valley was nice and easy so can see us having lunch in that area at least once

The last time we got stiffed for a fortune by having beer and crepes at piste side - I was young and stupid.........

So - any good suggestions for good quality and Value for Money places to stop for lunch. I dont want a 3 course jobbie at lunch but a nice trip out is always a highlight of the week (and if its fondue then its a double, nay Brucie, bonus!)

Thanks in advance

Andy

Hi Andy,

Well you are spoiled for choice and I know what you mean by costs! There is a huge variation in cost across Courchevel and it doesn't always corespond with quality.
Assuming you are down in 1850 there is a great Pizzeria (plus other things) down the road past Jean Blanc sports (landmark - neon sign at roof top height) by about 50m, this is to right of pistes as you come down to Croisette.
At other end (of Croisette) is the Hotel Tovets, again good food not overpriced.
Expensive but worth it is the Bergerie on the side of the Bellecote piste.
If you want up the hill then I would recommend Soucoupe, top of Plantrey chair on Chenus/Loze.
1550 is better value, no specific recommends.
Was your crepe at the Tremplin? :) right under all the bubbles in Croisette?
Their signature dish at Christmas was a seafood platter retailing at 385 euros for 2 (and, no, I didn't, but saw the menu).
Enjoy ......

Thanks for that - I was so stunned by the bill that I didnt pay that much attention to Courchevel as a whole (and having had to get there from VT on blues only with the beginners I had that year we didnt have that much time to hang around)

I think it may well have been where you describe - HUGE terrace with loads of tables and lots of Russians in all-in-one rompers carrying small dogs (I know I should have turned and left and if anyone I knew told me this story about the Champs Elysees then I'd have said they deserved all they got but there you go). Under the start of the Verdons lift from what I can remember / work out from my new Wipeout piste map / lens cloth.....

€385 for a two person lunch??????? my first ski trip to Sauze with the lads (ahem years ago) cost less than that!

No - that was just the main course
Mind you I was there this year and, yes, a savoury crepe for 20 euros is a lot but I love the place.
They are trying this year, as the number of Russians has plummeted. I noticed their Petrus was down from 5000 euros to 3500 euros.
I think Courchevel, in huge generalities, is better value now than 3/4 years ago.

Dear Lord almighty

I think the big French resorts are getting more "Real" though - in VDI last year the restaurants were good VFM (though not cheap). Dick's Tea Bar was still robbery with menaces though....

Andy,
I wrote something about the restaurants in Courchevel 1550 in my report last year. It only takes about 5 minutes to ski down from the centre of 1850 to 1550 for lunch, and everything there is much cheaper.

(about 3/4 of the way down the page).

Thanks Ally

As I said, didn't have much time actually in Courchevel last time so getting down to 1550 and across to 1650 is definitely on my list to do this time so lunch reports from 1550 is great!

1650 report ...
I do like my lunches

In town - right opposite the escalator (piste finishes above resort level and there is an escalator down to the street in the building by the telecabine)- Schuss (I think) to left of Intersport anyway. Fun, friendly and great food - had a lovely PDJ for 12/13 euros.
Up top, above 1650 2 choices. Bel Air, right by telecabine. Lovely restaurant, not silly prices but not cheap, very friendly.
And just below it by the Signal chair (bottom of) le Casserole. Haven't eaten here for a few years, coffee/hot chocolate and a few cakes very tasty and not daft prices.
This has been upgraded in the last few years, such a shame, but more so that the gorgeous, garulous, rude "Madame" who used to own it died. :(
