Has anyone done this?

It's seems pretty straight forward on google, but was just wondering if anyone had any top tips, re short cuts, avoiding toll roads etc.

Cheers

I take it your picking up a hire car and driving the final leg. The motorway is only about 40 miles of your trip so the toll won't be much anyway. I must admit doing that route in march this year i don't recall toll booths but there probably are a few.If you travelling on a Saturday the local roads might be busy, so best stick to the motorway. If you can get an earlier flight to chambery the better, as it's a small airport and with any french regional airport baggage reclaim can be a bit of a scrum and have founnd it gets more horendous as the back log piles up (especially lyon).Once you get to Bourg st maurice its a pleasure driving the last 15-20 miles, i have however had to slip snow chains on
during the climb, but the hire car should come with a winter pack which includes winter tyres & chains. Enjoy Tigne

Hi,

As with Paul, try and get as early flght out as possible to avoid the main traffic that can back up the N902 from Moutiers to Tignes ( this road also serves La Plagne , Les Arcs , La Rosiere , Ste-Foy , Tignes & Val D'Isere and is the only road in or out of the valley/s ).

From Chambery just folow the signs for Albertville -> Moutiers -> Bourg-St-Maurice. Once at the end of the A43/A430 and entering Moutiers you will see white signs with black lettering for Bourg-St-Maurice/Les Arcs etc stay in the relevent lane and follow the road up the valley to BsM.

When you get to BsM stay on the main road through and head over the first round-about and head down the hill, at the next cross road head straight over, you then come to another round-about ( near the train station ) ...again go straight over to the next one. At the next round about ( SuperU and Intermarche are on this round about so you know you are on the right road ) take the 2nd exit and head to the small village of Seez , carry on through Seez and at the other end the road Forks, take the right fork and stay on this road heading through Viclaire , Petite Viclaire , Ste-Foy-en-Tarentaise , La Thuile ( not the Italian one ) and then just stay on the road all the way to Tignes.

Again as Paul mentions check that your hire car is supplied with snowchains , if you have to buy any ( and the road from Moutiers to BsM is clear ) I would suggest SuperU in BsM , the snowchains are located in the far right corner of the hypermarket and they will stock a large selection for all makes and size of tyre.

I hope this helps, have a great time and a safe , enjoyable trip.

P.s If you haven't sorted car hire out , I can recommend AutoEurope 0800 169 9797 ( you can book online , but if you ring up you can reserve a diesel car, online it's pot luck ).

Thanks for the replies.

We've already booked the flights and the car. We land in Chambrey at 13:25 on a Monday so might hit some traffic. (If it's any worse than the traffic in Piccadilly Circus last night, I'll eat my ski boots!)

Really looking forward to the trip. We head off the last week of January so hopefully the conditions will be good. Having done some research on the net, and reading through these forums, Tignes looks and sounds fantastic… can't wait!!

Perfect getting there on a monday as most charter flights cause the mayhem on saturdays. The traffic should be fine as all the
weekend skiers have all fled the area. End of January is always a great week as it's free of kids (no disrespect) and Tigne never has problems with snow that time of year. Ski over to Val d'isere one day and go down the black run Le FACE it's great as a handover cure.
