Hi All,

First of all many thanks to those of you who helped me with advice regarding short transfer resorts with tree-line easy skiing. Its much appreciated.

Taking everything into account I'm now finally down to the two mentioned above. I like the look of the skiing at both and my ski partner is erring towards La Clusaz. However my only concern is the height there as in general the highest blues are at 1600-1700m with the runs back to and the village itself somewhat lower at 1100m.

We will be going out there the first week of Feb.

Do we risk the weather and snow conditions for the preferred choice of La Clusaz or go for the more snowsure Montgenevre?

Any views most welcome..........

Ta

Mel

Hi Mel

I'm actually thinking of going to La Clusaz in March and of course have the same concerns.

According to my research, La Clusaz has had a good coverng of snow in February & March in recent years. However, in 2001 it was difficult to ski down to the village, but I think that was generally a bad year for snow.

J2ski gives La Clusaz 4* for snow.

What we need is a long term weather forcast!

The Aravis area for the last six years have had very good snow cover, even 2007 one dump midweek opened the whole area, although I have not skied La Clusaz the only run in LGb to be a problem is the run back to LGb which can get very worn and is sometimes closed but the rest has always had excellent cover.

I've stayed in Sauze and had day trips to MontG twice, and the snow has always been better, and that was late Feb and mid March, you dont need to worry about snow there. Its also close to Serre Che and I have skied there in April and it was sensational.

As for La Clusaz, its a place I have read up on in WTSS and now find myself turning the page every time I come to it. Having not skied there I cannot comment, but it doesnt appeal because of the very things you mention, as well as some others!

Hi there

I have been living in La Clusaz for the past 9 years and can say that if the snow is a problem here, then its going to be a problem in many other resorts across the alps!
True the village is only 1100m but the run down to the centre of the village is open right through the season and into April - they have a good network of snow cannons and are regularly investing to improve this.
Same in Grand Bornand where this year they are extending the snow-cannoning along the whole run to the village and so (fingers crossed) it should be open right through the season.
The resorts are pretty quiet, and they manage & groom the pistes very well which helps keep the snow in excellent condition and ensures that all the runs are available. The highest runs at La Balme are mainly reds but here you can ski up to 2500m on north facing slopes - and this sector could be skied into May (they close on 25th April)
As with any resort - you can be lucky and have fresh snow and blue skies on your holiday or it could be damp and grey... but I think La Clusaz & Grand Bornand do very well for snow! There's always been plenty for me and all our guests...
