Hi.
We are going to Obergurgl for the 1st time in December. I am a 'cautious' intermediate and looking at the piste map it appears the only way to the Top Express cable car is by ski-ing down part of the number 3 red (I am presuming the 3a blue goes the other way?). Reds sadly and pathetically are not my preferred route if I can avoid one I've never skied before. Can anyone advise if this is a hard red (by Austrian standards)or is it at least quite wide, even if steep?
I know I can take the bus but that doesn't seem right somehow! Any help gratefully received.

Hi,
We went to Obergurgl a few years ago, and at the time I was only ski-ing on blues or very easy reds. I seem to remember that there was supposed to be a short blue linking run to that express gondola.

Anyway, when we skied it I found it horribly difficult for my level of ability and it rather frightened me. However, we managed it okay, skied Hochgurgl and came back by bus. The bus is very easy to get, it's the same one that goes around Obergurgl as it's running on a continuous loop.

It may depend on snow conditions of course. When we went there was very little snow and it was quite icy and the slope down to the express gondola was quite steep.

I hope you have a great time, whether you take the bus to Hochgurgl or ski over :D

Ally

Beth,

From the top of the chair lift you can take Blue 5 a short distance and on your right you will come across the Red 3 run. If you take this it will take you to the Top Express and across to Hochgurgl. The Red is not to bad and if you are a bit timid you can keep to the side of the run and come down in your own time. Its well worth it as the views are spectacular. There are a lot of nice blue runs over in Hochgurgl ) You will love it i'm sure. Are you there at Christmas? We are going back for the third time between 7th-14th December 2010. :D

Forgot to say that to avoid further anxiety getting down to the Gondola at Hochgurgl as it may be too steep. You can get back across on the Top Express and in Obergurgl ski the Blue 3a back down via Blue 5 and then 6. Hope this helps

Thank you Ally and Alistair. It helps a lot. Looking forward to it as everybody seems to love Obergurgl. We fly out 12/12 so if you see a really slow person on the far side of that red run, it'll probably be me!!

Glad you had a nice time Beth, as you said its lovely resort. We stayed between 7th-14th December and it dumped 60 cms of snow within three days. I think you had the best of the weather for your stay. :D
