I was looking for advice on which resorts in Austria or Switzerland would suit our needs. We are Americans coming for the culture and change of pace. Mostly blue and red runs and modern express lifts. Some nightlife but mostly about the skiing and visiting Europe.

My suggestion would be Kitzbuhel, world famous ski resort that has a bit of everthing for everone.

If you choose Zermatt, then you get the Matterhorn, lots of cruising and the chance to ski in Italy as well. It's a long way to come, make it spectacular.

How long is the trip?

I would go to Ischgl in Austria, it's high, big, very modern lifts, superb apres ski, snow-sure, and you can ski down to Switzerland - Samnaun. They both share ski area and Samnaun is duty free.

Look at the piste map - very impressive.

If you staying for 2 weeks then you can easily move to St Anton or Lech for second week. It is short bus/train ride from Ischgl.
It is another superb Austrian resort. Good apres and amazing off piste.

There are other places you can change over - Zillertal valley, Laax, St Moritz etc.

I agree with all of the above. We do Kitzbuhel every year and spend a second week at a different resort. This year it is Oberlech (Lech) last year Saalbach HInterglemm, next year Ishgl.

Any of these Austrian resorts are great!!
mum works too hard to pay for the ski trips!

If you want culture you cannot beat Kitzbuhel.
Kirchberg, which is a short bus ride away and on the same lift pass is better for blue run skiers.

I have been talked into going to Pfronten with some friends who are beginners. Has any one been there? What's it like?
As a family we normally ski in Saas Fee.
