La Plagne/Montgenevre/Valmorel - suggestions invited........

Went to Chamrousse back in February after the traditional ploughing through what seems like every website/brochure available and help your good selves on this website. My requirements were.......French or Austrian resort with nice blues (wouldn't say no to a green either) and easy reds for competent but slightly nervous 4th time skiers, through the tree line no more than about 2 hours from an airport.

Chamrousse was indeed great for skiing, excellent conditions and the pistes were perfect for us. It meant we could challenge ourselves by gaining speed rather than having to take on more gradient and narrower slopes. The only downside was its a small resort and so halfway through the week we had reached our personal maximum possible pistes to ski down and although it remained enjoyable it was repetitive by the end.

So..........am about to embark on the annual challenge for more of the same and am looking for anyone who can advise on the above resorts or any others which would be ideal for me?
Most important is plenty of tree-line skiing as my ski partner really doesn't do heights, secondly genuine blues or easy reds are a must.

i went to val cenis a couple of years ago and rated that quite highly. plenty of nice wide open runs and not too far from chamberry from what i remember

La Plagne or Les Arc or Les Menuires

Valmorel! My first ski holiday was here - I took some lessons at an indoor ski arena near me before I left but Valmorel is definetly beginner friendly - Certainly some nice runs there and beautiful scenery to accompany the skiing.
The apres ski activities are certainly not limited either with two night clubs and many bars/restaurants.
I really ejoyed my holiday to Valmorel - no issues with the resort whatsoever :)

Serre Chevalier every time.
Tree skiing, cheaper prices, wide and varied area, some lovely cruisy runs on blue and red, and a traditional feel rather than a purpose built monstrousity.
Trust me, I have been 3 times in the last year.

Hi mel. I remember you because we were looking for more or less the same thing. you chose chamrousse and i chose valmorel.

Looking back on it now my memories are that there was lots of runs that we managed to ski, we didnt try any reds though as some of the blues (in my opinion) should have been red, they are a class of their own, but by the end of the week we had mastered them. runs were a bit icy by the end of the week too as there had not been any snow for a couple of weeks but considering that they were ok. the big downside for us was the cost of everythign (i detialed in my report). would i go back? yes most definitley, it is a lovely easy cruisy resort and apart from the expense of things like food, it was just what we were looking for.

Tony - many thanks for the SC tip - would i be right in thinking basing myself on Chantemerle would be best for me and the types of pistes i am looking for?

Karen - hi again! I remember you too after the Chamrousse/Valomorel coin toss up last year! I am glad you had a good time and I have read your report with great interest and now about to look through the photos. It looks ideal for us and although alot of the skiing seems to be above the tree-line there doesnt seem to be big drops off the side or into the distance which is what freaks my vertigo suffering ski partner out!
