Hi everyone,
Can anyone advise what the slopes are like ( relating to amount of people) in Morzine at 1/2 term?
Bit stuck with kids not being allowed from school etc & have found a decent deal in this resort but a bit worried it will be chaos at this time of year
Any advise appreciated
Thanks in advance

do you mean feb half term?
it is one of the lower resorts around with fairly varied conditions-ie when i went there 2 years ago in april we got fresh spring powder for 2 days then rain for 3 but the seaonairres said they had had grass fields in feb!
personally the portes du solei is my fav area to ski in france but it isnt that snow-sure but hopefully in feb you should be fine

Frostbite,
I've never been there, but the Ski club of Great Britain says that it's a great place but 'extremely busy during February'.
http://www.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/skiresorts/resortintro.aspx/Morzine

When we were at Courchevel during Feb half-term, we found that the blue and green slopes were also 'extremely busy' but that the red and black ones were pretty empty. I don't know if this applies to Morzine as well, but it might do. In which case whether Morzine is too busy for you and your family might depend on what level of skiers you all are.

What price is the deal you've been offered (without telling us who's offering it in case someone else pinches it first!)?

Hi AllyG

Missed the deal myself as someone beat me to it; was looking at accommodation with a company called 'Rudechalets' ; they get an amazing number of positive reviews on trip advisor but suspect a high percentage of these may not be genuine ! Still, research suggests they do seem to be a forward thinking company with a good reputation; & did seem good value on the Feb 1/2 term at £600/ head catered ( own travel).
However, do not fancy very busy slopes as wife is only a blue/green run skier & would not venture to reds. Will have another think or where to go............any suggestions for a 'quiet' 1/2 term week? ( if there is such a thing)
Thanks

Hi Frostbite,
I think the main problem this Feb half-term will be finding anywhere at all! Apparently everyone has the same week for half-term, plus Easter is late so more people will probably be looking to go at half-term.

The cheapest half-board holidays with flights for this week that I could find are about £900- per adult.

If you want somewhere quiet I'd suggest a small satellite village of a larger ski area, to cater for the good skiers in your family as well as your wife.

If you could be more specific about your requirements I'm sure more people will come along to help you. Like, for example, do you want a chalet, hotel, or self-catering? And does it have to be France? Are you flying, driving, or going by train?

Unfortunately I strongly suspect that the busiest ski resorts will be those easiest to get to from the U.K. because they're available as a package holiday with flights. Most people don't seem prepared to do the legwork involved in booking a DIY holiday.

There are plenty of quiet French ski resorts around but you'll probably have to go DIY to get to them. For example, a friend of mine went to Praz-sur-Arly and she said it was really lovely and practically empty. And it's close to Megeve. But I don't think the major British tour operators go there.

Sorry I can't help more. We always seem to go to the major busy resorts ourselves.

Thanks for the replys all;
AllyG ; I think you are correct regards DiY & off the beaten track resorts; dont mind DIY myself, last easter we did just that to Val Cenis . Worked out really well but the drive was a little longer than hoped so was thinking Morzine etc would make it that 2 or 3 hours closer ( so more bearable).
Will look at your suggested area as it does sound it may be what we wnat. Not bothered as to staying in France just that isn't it the quickest to drive to? ( not dead set on driving just this seems to be the cheaper way in school hols)
Would also prefer catered/half board as its a bit of a bind having to sort eating arrangements out after a hard day on the slopes!
But, as I have to work within a budget I will have to compromise to 'get' a ski holiday in on 1/2 term. Cant afford the £900 odd per head x4 for my family; I try to keep the week below £3k for everything ( & havent had a problem in the past......although this 1/2 term is looking dearer than previous!).
Thanks again everyone & anymore info much appriciated.
Cheers

Frostbite,
Peak Retreats do a package holiday to Notre Dame de Bellecombe (same ski area as Praz-sur-Arly). I haven't been with them myself, but they say on their website that they were voted best ski company for 2009 by the Guardian and Observer, so they can't be that bad!

The Espace Diamant ski area has a total of 185 Km of piste, including 34 greens, 58 blues, 46 reds, and 10 blacks. They rate it 4 stars for beginners and 4 stars for intermediates.

They don't have prices for next Feb yet, but the price for the Feb half-term just gone was £597 for adults and less for kids - in the hotel Le Tetras with half-board including eurotunnel crossing with car. But it's only 2 star so it won't be posh

Their phone number is 0844 576 0170 but they're shut on Sundays.

http://www.peakretreats.co.uk/default.cfm/loaddoc.179

They say it's 556 miles from Calais, or 8 hours driving.

We paid £600 per head for our last ski holiday in Courchevel at Feb half-term, going self-catering and by train. But the ski passes and the lessons and ski hire pushed the total up to £1100 each - which is a shocking amount to spend on a holiday
