It's not that you NEED a guide, it's just that there are no pistes down to La Grave, and numerous ways down, with varying grades of difficulty. You will need to be confident and capable of skiing a long off piste route to make even the easiest descent. There is no opportunity to hop back onto the piste. You must carry transceiver/shovel/probe/ etc
You might enquire if 1 of the local ski schools take a group there each week. Usually a Guide will take the lead and the Instructor will sweep up at the tail of the group.

Worth a visit for a few days but I dont think there is enough for a week.
