I'm fond of the anecdote about an ex bootfitter friend's comment on boot fit, "if you don't have to cut your toe nails every week - your boots are too big". Well I had been neglectful of mine, and tonight I am paying the price. I spent much of several hours today standing around in my race fit boots. I don't normally spend more than a three to five hours skiing in them (when toes are pulled back). My big toe nails are killing me. they are not going black (which happens to some people), but it's a painful reminder to keep toe nails short for skiing.

Seriously, good point, and I hope you get to keep yours!
It might be, or it's often a sign that boots were too big (feet slide forward...bang = bye bye toenails)
That's good for skiing. I have no excuses though. My toe nails when cut short, are several mm back from the tips of toes, and don't normally cause me any problem. Just got lazy.

Normally, one week prior to departure. If nearer than that, then ensure a bit treatment with a sanding file.

Heh, After my last year skiing my big toe nails became black and eventually after few months came off. Is that mean my boots where a bit to small? They felt just right when I tried them on and have been quite comfortable throughout the holiday but after I came back home I noticed my nails going black.

I don't think the boots were to big as the person in the shop measured my feet and wanted to give me a 25 mondo point boots but after trying them on I have asked for smaller size 24.5 mondo point. They felt very snug on the feet and my toes were touching the front of the boot unless flexing.
