Hi,
I am looking for a second set of skis and after some advice on which models to try and what to rule out.
I have a pair of Salomon X-wing 6's which I have found to be a good pair of skis, but I am venturing off piste more and more and would like some skis that give me more float in the powder. I do not want to be using them all day off-piste at this stage, but I think that I would like to more and more as I get better.
Skill level: I carve confidently on all types of groomed runs, but still find very bumpy runs difficult and the steepest black runs are a bit daunting. So maybe skill level 6 or 7?
I am 192 cm (6'3") and about 110 kg (240 lb) so on the large size of your average skier.
What characteristics should I be looking for as a heavy skier?
Any models that I should try the next time I go to the Alps?

I bought myslef some Scott Neo's which are all mountain, but they are 82mm underfoot and quite stiff for a wider ski, so they are better on piste as well. A good 50/50 ski. However, you might want something a little softer maybe, but at least 80mm underfoot for going off piste, and nice wide tips too. Scott's shovel noses are great in the deep stuff.
Go as long as you are tall.
Read reviews, speak to people who have similar skis, try if you get a chance, and buy your first pair either 2nd hand or at a massive discount, dont pay top dollar.

Hi, I am similar measurments to your self and bought myself some new skis end of last season. I ended up going buying the HEAD MONSTER IM82 they are superb with a 120 tip 82 waist and 108 tail and nice and stiff to take my weight I think these are awesome. I was in between these and the K2 Apache recons they are both an all mountain ski but the head felt better. As tony h said get something wide!!

Thanks to both of you. It looks like at least 80 mm in the middle, ling and stiff are good attributes. Is there also a general preference for oversized nose for the powder and crud?

The wider the ski and bigger the nose, the better they float in the powder basically. Some skis perform better than others, you need to read online reviews, and not just Fall Lines opinions on selected models either.
My Scott's for instance are 122 at the nose, 82 in the waist, and 111 at the semi twin tip. They also have a 13m turning radius. Because of the sizes, the fact these can take me all mountain, the reviews I read, the slightly more stiffer construction compared to other wider skis, and the fact I managed to get a pair HALF PRICE brand new, I went for them without trying them, and we got on fantastically.
Great in deep snow, very fast as well in all conditions especially after a hot wax prep, nice strong feel to them without them appearing overly heavy, terrific on piste performance for shorter turns and some nice carving if you are prepared to work them a bit harder than normal carving skis with thinner waists. I am really pleased with them, but other people might not get on with them so well.
