Hi All
Looking for more information on snow canons - when do resorts use them, are the results any good etc. Going at Easter so assume may be a time of year when used...

Also best time of day to ski? Have read that in April many resorts have ice first thing and slush later - what would be the best 3 - 4 hour window given we are we young kids who won't be able to last the whole day

Thanks, and apologies if I've duplicated a thread

They are only used in mid and early winter when temperatures are below freezing. The resorts generally lay down a base with the canons to guarantee their season and then let mother nature do the rest. In easter you'll have whatever snow is left from winter. The good news is spring snow is far more fun then icy winter snow if there hasn't been a fresh snowfall in a while.

they can work anytime of the day but the temp has to be well into the minuses

-2 they can make icy snow

-20 they can make brilliant powdery snow

ie . the colder it is the better snow they make
358 days of **** for 1 week of perfect skiing........DEAL

I'm afraid I know absolutely nothing about snow canons, but I have skied late April and know for a fact that it can be a bit like skiing in poridge late afternoon, so with tired kiddies, I'd aim to finish before it gets too soft and slushy. I know how tiring I found it at the end of the day.

Cheers, so is it the grooming of the runs at the end of the day that makes them OK to use again the next day

Yes, and to be honest even at the end of the day in spring the runs can be better then the end of the day in mid winter. Slushy snow at least makes it possible to get an edge in. In mid winter when the surface powder is gone off the steeper slopes it leaves chopped up irregular mogul fields where there is bugger all grip between the moguls. At least in spring if you are not used to moguls you can slice through the slushy lumps. Its a bit heavier on the legs, but in my opinion technically easier skiing.

In easter you are fairly likely to have regular snowfall too, it isn't a foregone conclusion that you will have to deal with melting snow. The best time of day to ski could be 'all day'.
