While the maddening crowds are in Vancouver and Whistler, I will be in Big White from 25 February, for 10 days.
I need some reccon from BC regulars who have been and love it or dislike it, whatever.
So, temps?
The conditions?
The visibility?
The best spot for Apres, formal and of course informal?
The best place for ski hire?
The best instructors names?

Hi Vince,

I've been there a few times. It's a great resort. I'll try to answer some of your questions.

Should be good in late Feb early March. Below -15 would be unusual for that time of the year but not unheard of.

The conditions?
Great snow record. Good groomers, but even better wide open ungroomed powder and interesting terrain of various difficulties, easily accessible steep and deep tree runs (right off a certain lift, ask a local!)

The visibility?
Sometimes it can be bad. Invest in a good pair of goggles with a very light yellow, orange or pink tinted lens. There are clear markers to follow from the top of some lifts when when it gets bad.

The best spot for Apres, formal and of course informal?
Not the best place for apre-ski. Not to say that there isn't any, it's just that there is nothing special. There are a few decent bars (and one massive one). Not exactly a gourmet paradise. The on hill take away Pizza (from the bakery underneath the day-lodge) is good. The on mountain deli is also good. The expensive restaurants are poor value for money in my view.

The best place for ski hire?
Wouldn't know, although the ski service from the workshop in the day lodge is good.

The best instructors names?
Don't know but the ski school has an excellent reputation.

Vince

Have a blast.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions.

I get the impression it is a resort theme old west type town.
I do not mind at all, as long as everyone is friendly then i am okay with that.
I will let you know how i get on.

Hi, I'm a bit of a newbie.........do let us know how you find Big White. I am in the process of deciding between Big White and Silver Star. I have just heard that some locals call it Big Whiteout. Not promising!
Cheers

I have just returned after 2 weeks in Big White and we lost 2 days to white out conditions. Having said that some of the lifts were open but we were glad of a day off. The skiing is amazing, I'd go back.

Well, i did go but a week later. Flew out on Mar 3 and just got back today Mar 17.
In Big White its still Mar 16 though.
A time warp travel, but well worth it.
I skied 7 days straight and then crashed on the 8th day and was two days off with
shoulder ligaments gone. I still managed to ski Saturday and Sunday, very carefully
Big White is a huge mountain side with lots of runs for all skill levels.
The snow is so powdery and light and varies of course throughout the day. Friday was a 10cm
snow day and night and was glad to be out there on the weekend.
The food varies and suits all budgets. The pubs are good value and so are the cafes and restaurants.
Again, you could eat out every night if needed and not blow your budget.
I stayed in modest digs at Whitefoot Lodge, somewhere to crash at night. The room service was great
and very helpful. No complaints really.
Will definitely go back with family or friends next time.
Yesterday it was 1 degree and 212cms of snow and all 117 runs out of 118 working.

Vincentus,

Glad you had a good time.

Next time check out Kicking Horse and Revelstoke as well.

Big White gets more fog than just about any resort you can name. For great variety and family skiing check out Sun Peaks.
