J2Ski

Booked Ortisei\St Ulrich for Dec 20 about a month ago. Since then I have checked been constantly checking webcams and snow reports (sad I know), praying for lots of white stuff.

Now, J2 ski report the following for Selva Gardena
Upper 20cm
Lower 15cm

Whilst, the Val Gardena Website http://www.valgardena.it/en/snow-report/page355.html reports;
Updated: 10.12.09
Type of snow Powder
Snow level Valley: 30 cm
Mountain: 110 cm
Last snowfall 25 cm (08.12.09)

Quite a difference? Looking at the Webcams it looks like really good conditions so should I be panicking when some reports say the lower slopes only have 15cm cover. What do you consider the bare minimum (all other things being equal) for decent sking?

PS - i know very little about skiing

I think it depends where the information comes from. When I worked for a TO we used to have to do a local snow report and got it from the tourist office, or failing that, we took a ruler outside.

No idea why they would be so different though, suppose it could be down to when they were updated.

In answer to your last question, I would say as long as the resort is open then the skiing will be fine, although the local report sounds more promising.

:-) I think Mr Admin has already mentioned that the J2Ski hamsters are on a go slow at the moment, so that may be the issue. Frankly, I think they should sack the hamsters and employ marmottes, far more used to working in snow

On a more serious note, the depths quoted on sites often have little bearing to the pistes. Most resorts will make or move snow onto the pistes, where it is packed down to make a hard wearing, hopefully longer lasting ski surface. You will be very unlucky indeed to get no skiing at all.

I would also hesitate to add, that if you "know very little about skiing", it is likely that you will be staying on the easier pistes, hopefully in lessons, and these are the areas most resorts will always try to keep open. No learner slopes = no revenue for the ski school, who then get upset with the pisteurs

have to say (and i genuinely dont mean this as a jib at admin) but i havent found any reports that are accurate on any websites-on 3 different websites it said it was to snow here in bomrio today and we had sun all day! unless it is a blanket sysytem across the whole alps, im not sure if you can rely on aything being that accurate other than webcams!

BTW I am not having a go at J2Ski specifically. Most reports I find are slightly (to very) different for any resort you are to name.
Rossyhead - I even found one for Bormio that said there was 0cm (yes zero) of snow in Bormio, so I don't know what you have doing there.

I think some local forecasts must use the automated weather models, such as snow-forecast and metcheck.

Intelligent Hamsters are clearly the way forward 8)
