Hi
Have narrowed our holiday choice down to Flaine or Morzine/Les Gets.
We have never done sc apartments before, (usually HB in Austria) question is what are prices like? for example, food for breakfast in apartment, mid morning drink, lunch time snack, couple of drinks after ski and then main evening meal, either diy or going out.

We are a group of intermediates and some beginners who have skied for two years, advice on area lift passes and prices would be welcome also.

Thanks

Hi
Flaine part of the Grand Massif consists of 5 interlinked villages (Flaine, Les Carroz, Morillon, Samoens, Sixt) and is a great family place to ski. There is pleanty of nice easy green and blue runs through the trees or some good red and blacks for those that like a few more challenges. Lots of off-piste available too.

There is even a beautiful 14km run from the top of Flaine to Sixt called Cascade. A bus takes you back to the Morillon or Samoens to link back into the lift system. Great day's adventure. Ski pass prices follow this link http://www.lescarroz.com/index.jsp?c=70692

Flaine itself is rather an ugly resort, you may prefer Les Carroz which is a traditional pretty French Village with nice shops, restaurants a few bars and 2 supermarkets, Spar and Petite Casino.

Self-catering can save you money. If staying in Flaine or Les Carroz there are Carrefour supermarkets where you can buy your groceries prior to driving up the mountain. This way you can cook some evening meals if you wish or make sandwiches for lunch and just buy drinks on the slope.

Prices are not cheap anywhere in Europe due to the euro exchange....... But the Grand Massif is one of the more reasonable areas to purchase food and drinks. 'plat du jour' on the slopes is approx 10 - 15 euro. In a restaurant, in the evening a set menu can be anything from 18 - 30 euro. But Les Carroz has pizza places for eat in or take away, approx 7 - 10 euro.

I've been to Flaine and I really enjoyed it.
The night life isn't that great but if you're going as a family it will probably be fine.

I stayed in a catered chalet in the Hameux de flaine.
This meant we only needed money for lunchtime snack and drinking at night (not too much, see above).

I enjoyed the runs and found it really pleasant.
I liked the fun park as it gave you a chance to try jumps etc with easier jumps, green, blue etc.

There is one red run called Jade which a few people really struggled with and from memory I remember as being fairly steep/leathal.
Be careful if you wanted to venture off piste as it is quite dangerous there due to crevases.
I believe a few may have come to a grisly end off piste.

I would recommend it though.

We passed Les Carroz in the coach on the trip to Flaine and it does look really pretty.

Hi,
Are you driving?

If so you can save money by taking a fair bit of food with you. We take clothes in those storage bags that you vacuum the air out, leaving more room in the car for food.

We go to the Grand Massif a lot, the skiing is great. It can get expensive buying lunch out on the slopes every day. If money is a consideration buy some baguettes and ham, make yourself a sandwich and enjoy it sat among the trees at the bottom of the slopes in Flaine. Pure heaven!
We even take a flask of coffee!

Totally agree ..stopped in Samoens in Jan and had wonderful skiing but got charged €3 for a packet of crisps in Flaine so we took packed lunches...I would go again as the skiing is wonderful

Les Gets is a fantastic resort - we went in March 2008 with my snowboarder husband, my blue run skiier 7 year old and me - a shaky red run skiier. We all had a blast, and there is plenty to do in the resort. It's a wee bit more expensive than some, but not outrageously so, and plenty of supermarkets etc if you're self catering (we were).

We had 2 weeks at the Pierre & Vacances apartments in Flaine last year and will be back there this season. We ate back in the apartment at lunch, so that was no more that a fiver for 3 of us.
A flute was c.Eur1.00
Pain au Choc / Croissant are about the same price.
Hot drink on the mountain was Eur3.00 - 3.50
Lunch cEur10-15, Dinner out Eur15-25

P&V apartments are less than 100m from the slopes and the lift that links to the other resorts. Supermarket is 200m away.
