Thanks Tony, Laon I've stopped before and every thing is shut, Chalons is a possibility
Thanks Marcus not too keen on the small B & B's tend to go for something a tad more clinical, but thanks you have confirmed my thoughts about St Quentin 8)

I haven't been to St Quentin but I think there is good insect museum there.

Have you thought about Chalons-en-Champagne as an alternative? Thats a nice place. Or even Laon?

I know this area of France quite well, and can say that St Quentin is twinned with Rotherham, Neither place is desirable to spend the night. Have you looked on the Alastair Sawyday, special places to stay website ? we've used this before to find a stopover, most of the places are british owned and small B&B's where you are guaranteed a good meal, decent company and reasonable standard of accomodation.
Plus only an hour further on you can be in Lille, which has plenty to offer.

If you want something like an Ibis hotel, there is a decent new one in Maubeuge, its a crap town a bit off the beaten track, but straight up the A2 from Reims, and this road eventually leads to Valenciennes where you can pick up the road to Lille. I have also used an Etap hotel at Reims Tinqueux, that was chap and clean, there are a bunch of similar ones all around the Reims Tinqueux shopping centre, I think it is the junction of 2 Motoways.
Good Luck !
