So a new year of holiday entitlement starts on the 1st of Jan, so I thought I would go somewhere for a week on the 2nd :)

Decided on Switzerland as I am going to Austria before Christmas and France is, well, ridiculously priced.

So I have been searching accomodation for the last 2 hours and its not going well. Had kind of decided on St Moritz if I could get something resonable, turns out I can get nothing at all apart from one hotel quoted on expedia as 10,098 EUR a week  or a dormitory type thing 29km away for about 50p.

So onto Verbier, again no accomodation showing on the tourist website apart from a wee 6 bedroomed hotel in the centre with very nice rooms but no facilities.

A good amount of choice in Grindelwald but was there last Christmas, not a lot in Zermatt or Saas Fee either. Engelberg looked interesting but the ski area is a bit wierd in the fact its not interconnected.

So I think I have decided on Laax as it has a good rep for riding, and has plenty of accomodation available, even if the website is enough to trigger a fit.

I am sure someone here has experience and could give me a few wee pointers on snow reliability, tasty little spots for riding and eating etc.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Tino, the Guardian has an article on Laax today :D

http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2009/nov/14/laax-ski-resort-switzerland

And there's the Café No Name, a scruffily cool mountain hut with a DJ, good soups and snacks, and healthy-looking but heavily pierced staff,

(I've never seen a resort so heavily populated by young riders in such luminous, neon-coloured clothing),

Do you think you might be a bit old in your outlook for Laax, especially as I can't tempt you into some fashionable board rider clobber )

You could avoid them, for sure. Just get stuck in, the hotels sound rather nice :D

Now I have read it I dont know what to think :?:

I was actually looking at this hotel....

I spent a couple of days at the adjacent Hotel Signina, which pre-existed the development but has been revamped to be incorporated into the Rocks, with apartment guests going there to eat, swim and sauna. Full of animal prints and furs, rock sculptures and giant candles, it proved modern can be cosy, and the restaurant with funky zebra print chairs and quirky menu was a welcome change from melted cheese and rostis. I had scallops in a pomegranate vinaigrette, and glazed chicken with guacamole potatoes – very good, though I heard the next table complain about the small portions, to which the waiter responded: "It's the fashion."

Now I like a bit of ponciness as much as the next person, but WTF are guacamole potatoes????

I reckon it's the consequences of the Swiss Hotelier trying to "get" Nouvelle Cuisine 10 years after the rest of Europe gave up )

Reads good :D

Guacamole = Pureed Frog :mrgreen:

Mate of mines brother lives there. Does seem to be uber popular with boarders.
You'd like Verbier Tino, I had a great week there. Quite similar in a lot of ways to St Anton.
