Hiya peeps, thinking about doing a season in Austria this year since am outta work and looking for a change. Thing is, I'm a bit concerned about not having any hotel based qualifications, although have an extensive background in Customer Service/Sales/Bar Work/Management and other than skiing being a big hobby, I'm also well into cooking/entertaining and know basic German... If anyone's got any pointers/info on this, I'd love to hear it, including wages, hours etc, or if anyone's got any places available, let me know.

Don't fancy submitting a stack of application forms before I know I'm in with a chance.

Well that's not going to count against you! Would have thought you'd look pretty attractive to the TOs and independents alike. A good proportion of seasonaires go into it with no prior experience / qualifications and do just fine.

Get over to the forum on Natives to get a feel for the specifics of Austria and put the Natives Job Fair (during the Metro Ski Show next week) in your diary. The show itself is an opportunity to talk to the right people too.

Best of luck - go for it! 8)

Cheers for that. Had a quick look on the site and its given me some more of an idea of the type of thing I'm looking for. Dunno whether I'll be able to get to the Jobs Fair though - Live in the Northeast, so massive trek for me to get to London and don't drive, but I'm working on it.

[EDIT] Most of the chalet host/assistant positions seem to need either kitchen qualifications or experience in working in one - anyone know if this is a must, as haven't worked in a kitchen for many a year...

I've done about 11 winter seasons in Austria and went in with no prior experiance in kitchens or the service industry. Within 4 years I was running all the kitchens in Austria for a major tour operator.

As long as you are willing to work then there's nothing to stop you doing well. Most places hire staff seasonally so they are used to taking on completely new staff each winter.

Working for a british ski company is still slave labour and for running a hotel you can expect to earn around 800 pounds a month, other jobs (bar, restaurant, kitchen) can pay around £150 a month. Even though the wages are low all your food, accomodation, lift pass and equipment are usually supplied which can add up to quite a bit.

If you speak a bit of German then it might be worth looking for a local job. Minimum wage in Austria is about 900 euros but most jobs pay around 1200 and can also come with accomodation. Though the money is better, the experiance of doing a season with a tour operator is an unforgettable experience.

This winter I'm glass collecting in an apres ski bar (www.spitzbub.at) and getting paid twice as much as I was for being head chef.

I think Tui and first choice have online job applications so you can just fill them in and wait to hear back. The best way to find a local job is to pick a resort, go there and ask around, which I guess isn't an attractive proposition if you are currently out of work.

Googling a resort and jobs throws up a few options http://lmgtfy.com/?q=saalbach+jobs

Good luck!

P.S. alot of british companies go through staff like water, new positions come up all the time
