Self Drive - Which route is best?

The route is famously called the free route as in toll free so if you are off to Austria, eastern Switzerland, Livigno,Dolomites it's the route for you and its free tolls all the way, the route we used to use was France over into Belgium at Lille on to Luxembourg into Germany and down past Stuttgart, Ulm and then on to the Alpine areas.
It's a great drive we used to stop off at Ulm and then travel on to Livigno via Landeck then up the Inn valley into Switzerland and then Italy, great fun. 8)
Use your mirrors as the cars come fast from behind in Germany...... 8)

Hi. We have decided to do a self drive holiday in the February half term due to the high cost of flying independently or else the high cost of package holidays. We've already booked our accommodation and tunnel ticket. However, we can't decide whether to drive through France, going into Germany at/around the Strasbourg point, or else to go straight into Belgium from Calais, and then drive through Belgium, Luxembourg and then Germany. Any ideas...........? Many thanks.

Hi Penny,
We have done this trip a few times, and after trying both opted for straight into Belgium and Germany found the route more direct, normaly stopped of around the Mainhiem area.

Sounds brill - and cheaper than France, which is always good. I can't wait to be honest. I go away as much as poss but it's all so expensive with kids. Fell in love iwth Alpbach but need to go half term as it's so low. Therefore too expensive any other way. Thanks all !!

Ten to 12 hours driving time, no tolls on route Belgium Germany .The autobahns are a lot less Forgiving than the French motorways, if the weather is poor or if it is dark you need far more concentration especialy if you get onto a unrestricted section, but never had any problems.

The best way to Austria is via Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany. And no Tolls!
It's only a slope.
