Hi I am new to the site but can see that there is lots of helpful info on here, hopefully you can help me out!

I am looking to go skiing in New Zealand in their winter coming up. I have not been there before and am keen to hear the best resorts to go to. I know that there are quite a few and am up for visiting them.

The other thing that I have heard about is the idea of doing an instructor course, has anyone done one down in NZ and can they tell me about it?

Thanks in advance

Domi

Not skied in NZ but I have a few friends who were there for the season last year and this time round... they loved it but don't be expecting a totally alps-like experience.

As for instructor courses, I did one in Banff with Nonstop who also run a course in NZ. If you want any info. about Nonstop of the NZ course give me a PM and I can give you some details. Be prepared for the best 3 months of your life.

That is all,

I looked into what NZ had to offer after watching some of the High Altitude programmes on BBC this season. Looks like the best options are Queenstown on South Island, and Whakapapa/Turoa on North Island. There is allegedly a lot of off piste available in good conditions. It looks interesting alright.

Nonstop only run instructor courses, not sure where they are located, http://www.nonstopski.com/ is the website if you fancy taking a look.

A friend of a friend sent me this a while back about working in New Zealand, might be of use to folks:

Have you any preference of ski fields in nz? where ever you go be prepared for low pay, cold accommodation (new zealanders are not so keen on central heating) and changeable hours. skiing in nz is a little like skiing in scotland though we have more altitude the weather can be apalling and ski fields can be closed for days on end. on the up side you will meet loads of great people and have lots of laughs, and the skiing can be so so good!!! being a ski instructor in nz is all about the lifestyle, its not considered a career and the pay reflects this unfortunately.

When I was last home we did a season at Whakapapa, mt Ruapehu in the north island. its great fun but if you're just looking at doing one season you are better off going to the sth island, treble cone is a wicked ski field (not many lifts but great terrain) and the town wanaka is really laid back and sweet, not as touristy and full on as the neighbouring queenstown. Mt Hutt is alright, better for intermediates and the same goes for Cardrona, Coronet Peak can be wicked but it means living in queenstown which is very expensive. its important to live somewhere where theres something to do on your days off and/or if the mountains closed.

Spent a season on Mount Hutt, which is about 1 hour from Christchurh! worked as a lifty on the mountain during the day & did about 30 minutes of washing dishes in the evening at club 18-30 in Methven, for exchange of free food & accomodation & many a Jaccuzzi party under the stars. We had moonlit/floodlit skiing for the Mount hutt staff with BBQ food & wine or beer in a plastic glass to drink on the way back up the mountain, which led to some overly confident jumps! If you dont find an instructors course I would reccommend just being a ski bum! it was fantastic!

Hi there,

Thanks for getting back to me so quick! I checked out NONSTOP, thanks for the tip Pablo. They run a course on the South Island near to Christchurch, going to Mt Hutt, Porters and a load of the club fields. They seemed like nice guys, so am going to have a good think about it.

Pablo, what were they like with your course?

Thanks everyone!
