Good luck to the lad, I think he will need it!
The papers seem to have some very poetic licence. Don't believe everything you read in the papers Ian!!
They were not the British championships at all. They were the BARSC races (British Alpine Racing Ski Clubs) mainly run for DHO & Kandahar race clubs. There were only 18 boys in the race with 3 different nationalities competing. He was also beaten by the best GB girl, also age 9, by 6 seconds (same course)
The British champs are run by Snowsport GB and they only have Children (11-14) and Jun (15-20)/Sen categories and take place at Meribel from 28th Mar - 6th Apr (Jun/Sen) and 7-11th Apr for Children. They do run an unofficial Minis race there where all the very best U11's compete.
It's always nice to get things in the papers but this is some really good spin and really bigging him up.
I've never even heard of the Children's european cup especially for 9 year olds. (Having had someone in the GB children's team for 4 years and racing all over Europe in international races for them.)
I don't want to sound mean to him but there a large number of GB kids out there with just as much if not more talent. If he comes along to the British Mini races held in a couple of weeks and wins them then maybe the papers would have something to write about. Even then he has many years to go before things really matter when he starts FIS racing at 15.
