Okay I'm looking to live in Austria, and of course I'll be needing work. I understand that order to work I need an expansive knowledge of german which I'm working on every day 8).( I bounce between yahoo.de and j2ski  ) I also need to contribute something to the country. Right now I'm a student, I have machining experience as well as working the lifts at work and being trained on their maintenance. I don't care where I find work, nor do I care what I do. As long as it's not an Au Pair position!
Thank you guys, any help is always greatly appreciated

This link to the Austrian embassy should give you most of the info you need iceghost.http://www.austria.org/content/view/42/67/
Make sure the qualifications you have are recognised in Austria depending on the job you want. Good luck.

Thanks, It's got oodles of information on their that I would have thought about. Like my cat needing to be microchipped.
Let's say that by June I have a full two years at my resort and I have had training in lift maintenance ( to my benefit the company that makes our lifts is a swiss based company so I have the benefit of reading manuals in german while manning the boring top lift hut). Hopefully it will get my foot in the door.
After I get done with this I'm going to send out feelers and try and get someone from some resort to contact me
I live for long shots 8)

Iceghost,
The issue with applying for work as a lift operator is that the work is seasonal, winter and summer. In between seasons, many people work in building, agriculture, timber.
In the area that I ski in, the tourist office might give you pointers ~
http://www.wildschoenau.com/home/winter/en/default.aspx
In addition, the lift company website for the valley is:
www.schatzbergerbahn.at
I am sure that the lift company will carry out maintenance work out of season.
One language issue is that many places, including the Wildschoenau, have a strong local dialect. They will understand your deutsch, but will you understand the reply?!!! Don't worry, people adjust to your level of ability, and you soon get used to asking people to explain things differently!
You could also research the lift company, do they offer site jobs? Do they give a list of resorts in Austria that have their lifts installed?
Hats off to you!
