Hello,

I'm off to Morzine for half-term week with a mixed-ability, mixed-age group, most of whom have lessons on the Pleney side of the town in the mornings.

On previous visits I've always bough a full Portes du Soleil area pass but, in view of the exchange rate and the snow currently dumping on Morzine even at resort level, I'm wondering whether, in good conditions, there's enough skiing in the Les Gets/Nyon/Chamosiere area to keep us all occupied for the week? I've never skied that side before as the snow cover has always been too poor.

The saving vs the full PdS pass is a not insignificant €70pp for a 6-day adult pass. Also the logistics of Pleney to Avoriaz wouldn't be too easy with 12 skiers including 7 kids. Given it's half-term, the queues are also a potential issue.

Anybody out there with some expert advice?

It's been far too many years since I used to visit PDS every year (5 years on the trot staying in Chatel) so please treat this with a big bag of salt...

If memory serves me right each of the areas (including Morzine/Les Gets) has a good number of runs that (assuming they are all open and not closed due to avelanche risk) should keep you busy, however, with such a vast playground I would have felt seriously restricted by a local pass. There is something special about being able to up and over several ranges and crossing borders that would be lost.

If there is a large dump (happened twice in my years there) then many runs may be closed until late in the day when the avalance cannons have done their worst so the freedom to travel a bit further is invaluable then.

Whatever you choose, have fun!

You are right, queues at this time of year can be a pain. There are a couple of bottle necks. There's loads to do on jus the Morzine / Les Gets side.

Head up to the Nyon or Mont Cherie to avoid the crowds :)
