Hey all
Since I last posted on here re my hubby and I going away for rest of season, s h i t e has hit fan,and my hubby Rich, at 41, has had a heart attack and is in hospital. This may be a strange thread to start whilst this season is now completely out of the question, but we were wondering if anyone else out there has suffered a similar situation and if so, how long before you can ski and who the hell will insure you???? I am sure he should be concentrating on the fact that his heart just broke in front of us, but am also quite proud that his first question to the specialist was " Please tell me I`ll be able to ski again!!!"
Anyone been there, or know someone who has been there, as we are in completely new territory here, and I love my hubby more than anything, but skiing is our passion, and we are terrified that this is it for us!!! This is something he has asked me to ask, as the consultnats at the hospital are vague on the subject, and I suppose he is just scared...Thnaks in advance if anyone can offer ANY advice...J

A bad day on the slopes is better than a good day in the office !

Jobster that's shocking news - so sorry for you and your "hubby"; big wishes for a speedy recovery...
As for skiing again? Hell YES!
But... the timescale is going to be totally specific to Rich and you absolutely must (both) follow the advice of the docs.
A quick Google shows up, amongst other things, advice to take up cross-country skiing after a heart attack, so it's by no means ruled out. But take your time and go with the docs.
Someone on snowheads had a personal experience quite recently, related in this thread :-

May be worth dropping them a PM and swapping notes. Nothing will help and inspire you more than talking to other people who've been through the same thing.
My Dad had a serious heart "event" (just short of arrest) a couple of years ago and, although he had to take various medication for a while, is now probably fitter than I am. At 75 he leads his local Ramblers and is always skipping off to hilly places with his Saga-Lout buddies to go walking...
Time and patience, but take care (of yourself too - don't forget you're having a traumatic time too).

This is so much bad luck, just when you were taking such a positive view. There may not be too many skiers who would be in a position to offer advice, but I am sure that all of us feel for you.
My ski buddy Mel, has over the past 8 years, undergone radiotherapy. Throughout all of this, he remained positive, sometimes arranging our ski trips around his treatment! This year, he is undergoing chemo, and has had to cancel his winter. But he still is positive.
And I guess, that is the message. You don't know if skiing will be on for the future. But assume that it will be.
So, read next years ski brochures. Read, as I still do, ski technique books. Pop into Ellis Brighams at the quays, and check out the gear.
The most important thing is to get well.
I hope things go well, really well.

Jobster, shocking news, as you were both looking forward to a season in the snow. Best wishes to your husband for a speedy recovery.
For insurance once he's well, PJ Hayman is a company I have heard of, who offer cover for pre-existing medical conditions. Look for the Free Spirit Policy.

Hi! Sorry to hear your bad news. I hope that your hubby gets well soon.
From a personal point of view, my father was active and fairly fit, but had to have a tripple heart bypass a couple of months ago (he's 62. SInce the operation, he has been very positive and continually working on his fitness since coming out of hospital. He is probably fitter now than he has been for many years. Ask your specialist about specific cardiac rehabilitation units in your area - they were brilliant with my father, and designed a fitness program especially suited to him. (he hates gyms, and prefers to be out hill walking and the like)As well as working on his fitness in his own time, he would meet with the rehabilitation unit 2 a week oever an 8 week period to monitor his fitness. He's not been told that he can't do anything, and is indeed looking to going skiing again next year even though he hasn't been for a good few years (that is if he can persuade my mother to go too!!)
Keep positive, and I remember my father saying that in the initial few weeks after his operation the Dr said that it wasn't about speed but distance in order to get the hear muscles working again.
