Hi all

I have booked a suprise trip for my husband so as I can't ask his advice I thought I'd ask yours!

It seems the cheapest transfer option is to hire a car. Do I need to hire snow chains or look for anything special apart from the usual car hire search engines?

Thanks

Snow chains are a legal requirement in the alps, make sure you book a set with the car hire company.

We got a pretty good deal on car hire at Chambery last year when we were going to Alpe D'Huez (like you we'd found it was the ceapest option).

Even better we could pop across and collect the keys/car while waiting for the luggage which got us on the road well before the transfer coaches.

Great - so of it's 2 of us with one board bag the smallest car will do and I need to make sure it has snow chains and that's about it. I'm hopeless but the transfer costs or a taxi etc were so high!

Looks likes it's 2hrs in the car but the best I could do for a weekend suprise.

PS I do post on here but had to change my name incase he reads it so thank you all.

Book with Holiday Autos as they are normally cheapest especially with this link - www.holidayautos.co.uk/cgi-bin/liveweb.sh/QSearch.w?ctryref=GBR&lang=EN&aff=xOneAccount

For info if you ever fly to Geneva cars should come with at least snow tyres and often chains as well.

Bon. Allez!

Kevin thanks. We are flying into Geneva in Jan going to Chamonix so have yet to organise a transfer. I'll take that on board when looking.

Thanks again

Lucky you! On re-reading I should have specified hiring from the Swiss side of Geneva. Apparently it's Swiss law that car hire comes with winter equipment between October and April.
Bon. Allez!

In a group I agree it's easier and cheaper to hire a car, however, in a couple it might be cheaper to get the train/coach, Easter last year, I got the train from Chambery to Grenoble (8 euros) and then a coach up to Chamrousse for 3.50 euros and the alpe d'huez was the same cost, but i guess for a suprise trip driving is a lot easier and more romantic.
