Going to Montgenevre for the first time with Neilson. Just wondering what is the best choice re skipass & ski hire: buying from the tour operator, on-line or in resort :?: Any advice?

You can buy a local pass, or a Milky Way pass, and ski in the whole area, including Sestriere and Sauze, which I thoroughly recommend. The euro is not at a good rate for us Brits right now, so I would tend to wait and see if it improves before making any purchases, unless Neilson are offering a decent rate of conversion. I have always bought from the rep on the transfer bus, or directly from the lift company in resort on arrival. You can find out the cost of the lift pass for this year before you go, google Vialattea and there is a website which gives the costs, so you will know what you are paying before you go, and see what the rep offers you the pass for on the bus. Its usually the same, but he may offer for you to pay in £.
I have skied 2 days in MontG on day trips from Sauze, and enjoyed it, although I think I would find a week on the local slopes only a little limited personally. It is a good ski area, assuming there is plenty of snow of course. MontG usually has the best snow in the whole of the Milky way.

I think that all the ski hire shops in Montgenevre are owned by the same family by the name of Parvesi. The rates for hire are probably therefore the same in all of them. Look out for a drag lift going up to Chalvet area which is a sheer drop down the mountain on the left side and wall of snow on the right. I remember clinging onto this one as tightly as I could - if you come off it there really is nowhere to go.....

It was shut when I was there last February. People talk about it over there though. I understand the run at the end of it is fantastic.

Perhaps it wasn't working because someone had fallen over the edge! We were amazed at the lack of netting. Can't really remember the run as the drag experience left me just grateful to get into the cafe at the bottom for a chocolat chaud.
